Foundation, Year 1 & 2 News

F-2 Term 4 News

We are now past the half-way mark of Term 4 and the Junior School has been a hive of activity. From the Art Show to Prayers in Pyjamas, we’ve been busy both in and out of the classroom.

Foundation

ENGLISH

In English this term the Foundation students have been consolidating their knowledge of letters and sounds. We have been exploring digraphs (two letters making one sound) and trigraphs (three letters making one sound) along with graphs (one letter making a single sound).

The Foundation students planned, drafted and published their own Holiday Recounts. Here are a few examples of our stellar writing:

MATHEMATICS

The Foundation students have been revising their year’s worth of mathematical learning. We have been focusing on flexible thinking and the many ways of solving a problem. Take at look at our beautiful mathematical flowers, which show multiple representations of the same number:

INTEGRATED STUDIES

Rolling and sliding are but a few of the concepts we’ve been exploring in Physical Sciences. The Foundation students enjoyed putting different objects down ramps and predicting which would roll or slide. We were like real scientists, writing down our observations!

We were lucky to have Dan Clohesy visit our classroom and teach the children all about the human body. The Foundation students got to look at models and learn about the five senses.

RELIGION

In Religion, the Foundation children have been learning about scripture and the structure of the Bible. We know that the Bible is comprised of both the Old and New Testaments. Leading up to Christmas, we will be exploring the Advent story and preparing for our Nativity Play.

We also had our Day for Daniel where we learned all about safety.

YEAR 1 / 2

ENGLISH

The Year 1/2s have been looking at well-known Fairy Tales and creating their own versions. They changed aspects of the story - either the characters, the setting or the problem - to make them their own. Then they created a comic of their “new and improved” Fairy Tale. Rachel explained her comic by saying “In my comic I was telling the story of Little Red Riding Hood but I changed the story a little bit. I made Little Red Riding Hood a boy called Boy in the Blue. Boy in the Blue had to go on a journey but in my story he had to visit her uncle who lived in East Bentleigh.”

MATHEMATICS

In Mathematics the Year 1s have been learning how to partition three digit numbers into hundreds, tens and ones. They learnt that the place of a digit in a number tells us its value. The Year 2 students also explored numbers in the thousands. They made PLACE VALUE MONSTERS using MAB blocks. They found the total value of their monsters and wrote the number four different ways. Some ways they wrote the numbers were: in words, stretched out, in a place value grid, on an abacus or in a word story.

INTEGRATED STUDIES

In Integrated Studies, the students have investigated how instruments make sound. They played with instruments and discovered that they could create sounds by blowing through them or shaking them, hitting, tapping, banging or scraping parts of the instrument together. Then the students were given a STEM challenge to create their own instruments. They did an amazing job!

RELIGION

In Religion students have been discussing what their Image of God is. They read a book called “Images of God” that helped them experience different ways of seeing God. We found out that we can see images of God EVERYWHERE, for example, we can see God in the beauty of nature and when people show kindness to one another.
