College Sport

Welcome to Term 4 and a host of new sports for students to participate in.  It’s a very exciting term, with Mount Carmel involved in a huge number of rosters and events.

Primary School Regional Basketball Tournament

Congratulations to the Basketball teams that took to the court recently for the Primary Regional Basketball Championships.  Mount Carmel were represented in both the Senior (5/6) and Junior (3/4) Division 2 competitions.  Both teams had some fantastic competition across the weekend, and the players really enjoyed the experience.

Special thanks to Lisa Cranfield, Frances Conrades, Stacy Browne and Esther Batchelor for Coaching and Managing the teams.

SSATIS Basketball

Well done to both our Year 7 and Year 9/10 basketball teams for their efforts in the SSATIS basketball season.  The Year 7 team had a strong season, losing only two matches and finishing 4th on the ladder.

A combination of Year 9 and 10 students formed the Mount Carmel team that participated in a Year 10/2nds (College) roster. The team played very well against many older players, finishing the season mid table.

Special thanks to our coaches Maria Gerathy and Kate Clark for their contribution to the teams.

Many of our basketballers will now participate in the High School Basketball Tournament on the weekend of 9-10 November.  Mount Carmel are participating in Junior (7/8) Division 1 and Senior (9/10) Division 2 competitions.

JSSATIS Touch Football

The JSSATIS Touch Football season commenced last week, with our Year 5 and Year 6 teams facing off at Lower Queenborough.  Most of the players are having a go at touch football for the first time, so the first week was about learning the game, some new skills and tactics.  Their improvement was already evident in this week’s games against Fahan, with plenty of fun and laughter along the way.

Secondary Touch Football

The Secondary Touch Football roster has also commenced at Wentworth Park on a Monday and Wednesday afternoons. Mount Carmel has three teams in the Year 7 roster, a Year 8 team and a Year 9 team in the 9/10 roster.   Many of the Year 7 students are new to the game, so it’s fantastic to see so many enthusiastic participants.  The Year 8 students are past finalists, so they are keen to perform strongly this season, defeating Dominic 3-2 in their opening game.  The Year 9 team started the season low on numbers, but have rallied the troops and are ready to trouble Fahan this week. To keep up to date with results and ladders, these can be found on the Southern Touch website, or Game Day App.

JSSATIS T20 Cricket

Mount Carmel Teams were out in force at the opening on the JSSATIS T20 Cricket competition on Monday afternoon at Soldiers Memorial.  Three Year 5/6 teams and two Year 3/4 teams are participating this season, which is more than ever before.  There were a combination of returning players and new players to the game, but all with excitement and enthusiasm for this modified game of cricket.  Thanks to our volunteers who will be facilitating the games each week.

STCPSSA Athletics Carnival

Good luck to the Mount Carmel Primary Athletics team who will compete at their first inter-school event next Friday at the Domain Athletics Centre.  The STCPSSA Athletics Carnival brings together all the Catholic Primary Schools for a range of track and field events.  The following Thursday, the team will return to the Domain to compete again in a slightly different format, against the Independent Schools at the JSSATIS Athletics Carnival.

All Schools Track and Field Representation

Congratulations to Year 7 student, Jessica Bray, who has been selected to represent Tasmania at the Australian All Schools Track and Field Championships in Perth in December in Javelin, Shot Put, 80m Hurdles, Long Jump and U16 Javelin.  Jess’s selection came following her strong performance at the Tasmanian All Schools event on the weekend.  Jess competed in ten events and placed in nine.  The highlight was winning the U14 Javelin, and setting a new state record.  She also won Gold in U16 Javelin, U14 Hammer, Shot Put and 80m Hurdles, Silver in High Jump and Long Jump and Bronze in Discus and 200m Hurdles.  An amazing performance!

Gymnastics Achievements

Congratulations to Year 3 student, Stella Cranefield, who attended the National Clubs Gymnastics Carnival on the Gold Coast in the holidays. Stella competed for Hobart PCYC in their Level 5 WAG team. Their team competed against 62 other teams from around Australia. Unfortunately they did not make the finals at the conclusion of Day 1 of competition, however they finished first from 22 teams in their division after Day 2 of competition. Stella will now start training for Level 6 WAG.

Congratulations to Year 6 student, Bethany Harvey, who competed at the Tasmanian State Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in September.  She achieved her highest score in this competition, 10 points above her previous. She came 2nd for Freehand, 3rd for Clubs, 2nd Hoop and Runner up State Champion for AA.
