Education in Faith

Anyone who eats this bread, will live for ever

(John 6 : 51 - 58)

The story so far….

Jesus has been busy teaching the people, healing the sick and performing miracles. The crowd followed Jesus because they were drawn to him, they wanted to hear him. In addition, he told them about the love of God their heavenly father. This love is fully expressed for us in the Eucharist - that is our strongest belief as Catholics.

At every Mass God’s people, meet together, not just as individuals but also as members of the body of Christ- a community. At Mass we proclaim God’s word, it is a thanksgiving, a Eucharist to God for all he has given us, especially his son.

At the heart of the Eucharist, there is a blessing or consecration of bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ, which we receive in Holy Communion.

The words of the liturgy today ring out:

‘The blessing-cup that we bless is a communion with the blood of Christ and the bread that we break is a communion with the body of Christ’. So we are brought together by Christ who cares for us. Christ is alive with us as we gather. If we allow him to do so, he will satisfy our hunger. This Gospel passage gives us one of our firm foundations for the institution of the Eucharist so that, in faith, we will eat the bread that will give us everlasting life.

Bread is important, healthy food that helps us to grow. When we eat bread it becomes part of us, it provides energy for our bodies. Jesus is ‘living bread’: he wants to be inside us, to become part of us, so that we grow strong in God’s love and life.

The Eucharist is everything.  It is all things, the fullness of life, eternal salvation, mercy, grace, happiness, etc.  The Eucharist IS God. Therefore, the Eucharist is all that God is.

I wonder:…

…what Jesus meant when he said ‘whoever eats this bread will live for ever’?

…how and when Jesus comes to us as bread today?

…What I am most thankful for when I receive the Holy Eucharist

.…Jesus promises me "real life" in this Gospel. To me this means .....

.…I know I received the "bread of life" when . . .
