The Year so far...
We began the year with the 2004-5 and 2018 Alumni celebration. It did not matter if it was 1 or 15 years since they were in Year 12, there was excitement. There were many stories to share and they enjoyed sharing their life journey.
Our Prep students and parents attended a session to ‘Meet the Teacher’, prior to their first day. It gave them some private time with their Prep teacher and to become familiar with their surroundings. We then celebrated the first day of a school with a Prep Parent morning tea for our families.
During our parent sessions in February, Mrs Crisara focused on key elements of “Relationship, Resilience and Respect”. She discussed several ways to build a strong parent-school relationship and outlined the academic and social benefits of working together in the best interests of our children. Mrs Crisara also reinforced how to foster and encourage greater resilience in a learning community. At this time, we did not know what was to come ahead and how timely this advice would be for the preparation of Home Learning. The importance of resilience was reinforced with the following:
• Connecting to their community
• Coping strategies
• Self-control
• Goal setting and routine
• Emotion of self and others
• Self-esteem
The Year 12 students commenced the school year with a Student Learning Conference. The purpose of the Conference was to reflect on wellbeing, study skills, organisation, motivation and the importance of the final year at school, in a professional conference environment. Students also participated in workshops run by Elevate Education, which focused on building on the Study Skills seminars they attended in Years 10 and 11. A motivational presentation from Ben Pettingill, was the highlight of the day. His life experiences and positive outlook were an inspiration to all.
In March, Maria Vamvakinou MP - Federal Member for Calwell, visited the College to talk to the Year 10 Legal and Politics class. She shared aspects of her role as a Member of Parliament and what she is undertaking to improve the wellbeing of her constituents. The duplication of Mickleham Road featured prominently, as well as opportunities for young people in her Electorate.
The College recognised and supported its 2020 leaders with a Student Leader Training Day at Hume Global Learning Centre. During the session, the students created an image and summary to represent their College. The College also held an Induction Assembly for Student Leaders, to celebrate their achievements.
During the beginning of Term One, we had our Year 7 camp. The students attended their annual camp to Phillip Island Adventure Resort for three days. With almost 150 students on site, they engaged in a variety of activities. All the students (and some teachers) had the chance to participate in archery, rock climbing, giant swing, flying fox, the high ropes course and raft making. The night activities were equally enjoyable with a Trivia Evening and then a Dodgeball Night. We were fortunate to have great weather and it was a very enjoyable camp.
