Career & VET Report

Western Victorian Careers Expo 2020

On Tuesday 23 June all students from Years 9-12 will be taking part in the Virtual Careers Expo organised by the Wimmera and Southern Mallee Careers Association.

The program for the day is attached below and students can also access this information on Google Careers Classroom. Students will attend the Expo all day on Tuesday and will not have their normal classes. I encourage Parents to look at the program and discuss the many seminars on offer with their children. The Expo is open to everyone including Parents and Jobseekers.

VET

VET classes have resumed on site for students attending Horsham College and Longerenong. All students have a timetable for next week. Revised timetables for next term will be available shortly. All changes that occur to VET training are entered on the Google VET classroom and reminders are sent on XUNO. A reminder that with current COVID 19 restrictions, students who are unwell are to stay home and not attend VET classes. If students arrive at VET in Horsham and Longerenong and are unwell they will be advised to arrange for Parents/ Carers to collect them at these venues.

Year 12 students are working with me on VTAC and SATAC applications for University and TAFE admissions in 2021. The Careers Expo will provide invaluable information for Senior students from a range of Universities and TAFE providers, in the absence of Open Days this year. Students are encouraged to regularly check updates on University websites and arrange Virtual tours of Campuses and research Scholarship opportunities.

New early entry program 2021 Swinburne University

Early Entry Program Swinburne has just announced a new early entry program for the 2021 intake! Offers will be made on a recommendation from your school and will be ‘ATAR free’. You will still need to complete year 12 and meet subject prerequisites, but in the words of Swinburne, ‘this isn’t an easy way out, it’s a determined person’s way forward’.

How do I apply?

Step 1: check that your course is eligible and that you meet the subject prerequisites.

Step 2: ask your school to fill out the recommendation form. Your school will make an assessment based on your past results and capacity for tertiary study.

Step 3: In August / September, add your course/s to your VTAC preference list. Your career adviser will talk to you about the order of courses on your list. If your school agrees to recommend you and if you achieve a minimum English study score of 20, meet other subject prerequisites and complete year 12, you will receive a guaranteed offer. For a list of eligible courses, to download the recommendation form and to register your interest, go to https://www.swinburne.edu.au/alerts/coronavirus/future-student/early-entry-program/

Do you need a Tax File Number (TFN)?

If you are planning to get a job or if you would like to study at university or TAFE next year, you will need a TFN. You will need to apply for a TFN – these are not issued automatically. To start the application process, go to https://www.ato.gov.au/Individuals/Tax-file-number/Apply-for-a-TFN/
