Senior School Happenings

Welcome to our final edition of Whytalla for Term Two. I’m not sure about you, but this term feels like it has been at least 25 weeks long, so I know there are a lot of students and staff in the Senior School who are very much looking forward to the approaching holidays – myself included!

Speaking of holidays, it is really important that in the break the students do just that – they take a break. Refresh. Reload. Be ready to face Term Three head on, as it will be busy, just like every term is. This is especially important after the solid efforts that the students have put in to this term. But even though a break is crucial, so is doing a little bit of work. Keep some work ticking over so that everything that has been achieved in the last six months is not just stopped, but rather still sitting there. This will be crucial, especially with exams being later this year and the extended timeframe of everything. Students need to keep ahead of the game and not lose sight of where they are getting to. I am not asking that they work for the entire holiday period (definitely don’t do this!) but please don’t do nothing. We are too far into the year to let it go completely.

I know I am definitely looking forward to my break, let me tell you! But I also have work that I will be doing, as holidays are just time that I have away from school. It means that I don’t get to see my students every day, but it doesn’t mean that I am not thinking of new ways to engage them, or the work that we are going to tackle in Terms Three and Four so that they can maximise their learning.

It is exciting times in the Senior School. I have requested to be the teacher for the VCAL Literacy class for the remainder of the year and provided the timetable will allow, I will be taking on that teaching position, along with my current load. I am really excited to work with the VCAL students and help them achieve their goals in Literacy.

So, students, do what you can to be on the front foot for Term Three. It is going to busy, that is a guarantee, but with consistent work, it won’t seem so overwhelming. I know you can do it!

I look forward to seeing you all back in Term Three and working with you all.

Pythagoras back in Edenhope College

Mr Pythagoras is back in Edenhope College. Our Year 9 students each became a little Pythagoras and proved that the small and medium two square shapes can fit inside the bigger square shape. (The sum of square of two sides in equal to the square of hypotenuse, c2 = a2 + b2).

Through visual learning, everyone in the class has enthusiastically participated to proof ‘Pythagoras Theorem’. They have identified how they are going to apply this theory in their everyday life such as in the roof (rafter), fitting a ladder as a painter, installing a tent in a camp, measuring the shadow of the tree. Well done Year 9

VCAL Numeracy

VCAL students are learning and developing their knowledge and skills through Hands-on-Learning.

As part of their learning, VCAL students made a project to develop the school garden and to save water.

Students applied their mathematical knowledge to measure the garden and find the amount of mulch they need to cover it.

VCAL students found that it’s available for free from the Shire for this time, but they also researched the price, if they had to buy it and calculated the cost. Well done VCAL students for showing your work related skills too, and the newly mulched area looks great!
