FRESH PICKS

JUNIOR

  • The Peski Kids: Near Extinction by R.A. Spratt – the excursion was supposed to be educational, but April tries to smash her way out of a bus, Fin gets his head bitten by a dinosaur, Jo finds himself carrying around a girl with a fake sprained ankle, and Loretta gets over-enthusiastic with a butane torch!
  • Princess of Pets: The Snowy Reindeer by Paula Harrison – Ruby Palace is no place for pets, but Princess Bea won’t let royal rules stop her from helping animals in need
  • Beatrix the Bold and the Riddle Town Dragon by Simon Mockler – when you’re Beatrix the Bold and you’ve got Oi the boy, Dog the dog and Wilfred the Wise by your side, you can do anything, including crossing a kingdom to find her long-lost parents

TEEN

  • Children of Virtue and Vengeance: a Legacy of Orisha fantasy novel by Tomi Adeyemi (PRC 9-10)

RBdigital – Audiobooks and Magazines

As you may know, the library subscribes to lots of magazines for our readers, and this includes eMagazines with RBdigital. Your library card gives you access to around 60 magazine titles, which you can download on your computer or device, and even flick through the pages like (well, a bit!) a conventional magazine. You can do this via our website by searching for magazine titles, or download the app for your device. This link will take you to the RBdigital website (where it’s easier to set up your account for the first time): https://wimmera.rbdigitalglobal.com/

I have recently become a convert to using RBdigital for listening to audiobooks, which I really enjoy doing while working on a craft project, or driving somewhere – it makes that ‘lost’ time feel more productive! I’ve recently listened to The Animals in that Country by Laura Jean McKay and Peace by Garry Disher, both thrillers set in the Australian bush, which I recommend.

ONE TO WATCH: The Rover (MA15+)* Set in a darkly-possible near-future in the Australian outback, from the producer of Animal Kingdom, The Rover focuses on the actions taken when a group of desperate, dangerous men steal the car of another desperate man (Guy Pearce) who relentlessly pursues them with his hostage/helper (Robert Pattinson). The characters in this film are both strange and familiar, in a disintegrating world where fate can be brutally sudden but kindness might still be found. Filmed around the Flinders Ranges in northern SA, it gave me a roadtrip travel bud! *Strong violence and coarse language

If there’s anything we can help with, please get in touch.

Happy reading,
