Remote Learning Staff

Virtual Dinner Party

Last week staff held our equivalent of a virtual dinner party. The brief? Make a main, dessert or design a table setting appropriate for a dinner party with Mrs Morley and her husband, Michael. Those who know Mrs Morley will know she enjoys the finer things in life and she radiates sophistication. With this in mind, staff scrambled to design and create the perfect meal or table setting, some with less success than others.

Self-isolation has not been a hardship for me. Instead, it has allowed me to have more free time to indulge in my love for making things. Each day, I have tried to squirrel away an hour where I can sit and quietly immerse myself in a little bit of meditative stitchery.  It’s a chance to escape from learning tasks and laundry baskets and from Webex and Windex.

At the beginning of our remote learning journey I stumbled upon eAudiobooks at the Eastern Regional Library and although I prefer to read a physical book, eAudiobooks have been a wonderful addition to my crafternoons.

As I hand stitched a small teddy, I listened to Tim Winton’s ‘The Boy Behind the Curtain’ and

as I sewed a rabbit for a friend’s baby, I listened to Kate Grenville’s, ‘One Life’ and I crocheted facecloths while listening to ‘The Moment of Lift’ by Melinda Gates. Each of these books was read by the author themselves which I really enjoyed as the authors emphasised certain details whilst reading their story, allowing the listener to feel a degree of intimacy and familiarity.

Currently, I am listening to ‘One Hundred Years of Dirt’ a memoir by Rick Morton, while slowly but surely, adding to my EPP hexie count (English Paper Pieced hexagons). Thankfully, this is a long term project because I know that as we come out of isolation, I will need to try harder to make time for crafting.
