Engage with Art

As part of the Healesville High School instructional model, we try to find ways to “engage” with students before starting a new topic. In English, teachers ask students to make connections between the ideas in the text and their own life so they can understand the author’s message.

The Year 12 VCE English students are in a very

unusual situation this year as they are studying a science fiction novel set during a pandemic. We didn’t plan it, but it couldn’t be more appropriate for the engaging aspect of our approach to education. As Emily St John Mandel’s “Station Eleven” progresses, the characters learn to appreciate many of the basic things in life that we often take for granted.

Just like the citizens of Healesville, the characters in the novel think about the importance of relationships, ponder the meaning of life and rekindle their love of art after losing so much.

Students were asked to think about their relationship with art before exploring the ways that art is represented in Station Eleven. (One student/ Sinead Long) chose to create a visual representation of the novel to show her love of art. I am sure you will agree that her spectacular work is lively and well-crafted, evoking many thoughts as you gaze at each image. You can certainly see her passion for art.

The hope is that students will use their own experiences to think about the way the author communicates with the audience. If they know that many readers share Mandel’s love of art, they can think about the way that Mandel reminds us all to be as creative as we can be, even in the midst of chaos. During these challenging times, that is a great message for us all.

Year 7 Humanities

😊 Ancient Egyptian cooking 😊

Ingredients:

  • Whole wheat flour
  • Active yeast
  • Warm water
  • Sugar
  • Oil
  • Cracked wheat bran
  • Salt

Preparation:

It took a long time to prepare because we had to knead the dough. That took a long time because it was hard, and once I had kneaded it,

I had to wait an hour and a half for the dough to rise. Once the dough had risen I had to cut it into eight equal parts then I had to put them into the oven.

Taste:

I didn’t really like the taste of them. I was surprised that they were hollow. I think they tasted better with butter.

Year 10 Food Technology-Food Waste.

Declan Garratt sent me these photographs of a meal he made from 'Leftovers' - using the leftover beef from a slow cooked roast,

adding vegetables and  home made dumplings created a perfect hearty meal for Declan's family.
