For the love of reading

Reader Leaders in action

Special deliveries were made to Year 7 Connect classes last week. Books, individually wrapped as gifts, were presented to each Year 7 student  to enjoy.

Working hard on delivering books, and building the excitement, were Cecil Hills High School's newly appointed Reader Leaders. Here's what they had to report:

  • Kuber Thakur - students were really pleased with their book choices;
  • Falline Iwan - noted the conversations, and hearing one girl say “she loved reading!”
  • Djordje Kaludjerovic - Year 7's very happy with new books to read;
  • Elena Kozul – students so happy to receive their books, one saying “It’s Christmas”;
  • Jazmyn Rizzuti – students very excited;
  • Abbey-Jorja Maraun – excited and enjoyed swapping with each other;
  • Elina Chap – heard lots of discussions about the books and their excitement at receiving the book;
  • Anabela Duric – observed the students' excitement and book conversations;
  • Zara Manton -  The classes we visited seemed to really enjoy reading. They were silently reading their new books. When asked about it, they said they appreciated the gesture and were really enjoying it.  The students will become smarter as they read new words. They will also learn new ways to perceive the world and its challenges. Reading is for everyone, at every level of reading!"

Home Library encouraged

Mr Sutton’s idea of helping each Year 7 student start their own home library is how our Year 7 Book Club started.  The school purchased 270 books through Scholastic Australia and each book individually wrapped by our Library staff (Mrs Low, Mrs van der Meer and Mrs Fornasier).

Book Club Reading Program

Presenting the books to Year 7 students in their Connect classes builds the basis for the Book Club reading program held each Friday. The idea is for students to be encouraged to read by their Connect teachers and Reader Leaders who all have a great love of reading. There are multiple copies of each title, so the idea is that students meet in mini groups to discuss the books, hence the name Book Club.  Books read can also count towards reading records in the 2020 Premier's Reading Challenge, another initiative to support reading at Cecil Hills High School.

It’s very exciting and as Abbey Jorje observed “When the first few opened their books they looked excited, some others looked unconvinced about the idea of reading a book for fun, but after some encouraging they seemed sold on the idea!”

We look forward to the Year 7 Book Club moving forward, and plan to support reading in this way each term. Better get those bookshelves built at home!

Proof it works

Eliah Oraha received his first book on Tuesday.  He returned to the Library on Friday of the same week and borrowed his next book which is part of a series.  The good news is that our school Library has all the six books in the series, so Eliah is going to be a very busy reader!

Yours in reading.
