Kitchen garden

St Kilda Park Primary School Kitchen Garden Program Term 2 2020

The year 3 and 4 students have enjoyed finally returning to the Kitchen Garden program. They began with a garden treasure hunt and discovered all the vegetables, fruits and herbs which are growing in their kitchen garden.

The last 2 weeks of the Term, the students will enjoy a colourful Indian feast made with vegetables from our garden.

Due to the COVID restrictions, the program has been modified and the students will participate in a more garden focussed program. They will all have the opportunity to make their own Indian flat bread, and I will be cooking the Indian feast for them.  We will then all enjoy the feast together.

 The menu will be:

  • Sri Lankan beetroot curry
  • Red lentil dhal with broccoli and silver beet
  • Indian flat bread
  • Coconut rice with lime and ginger
  • Fig and coconut ball

Some of the vegetables the students will harvest for their lunch will be:

  • Beetroot
  • Potatoes
  • Coriander
  • Silver beet
  • Kaffir lime
  • Fig
  • Red onions
  • Chilli

The year 3 and 4 students will also take part in a wellness Wednesday activity that will focus on the community.

In Term 1 we were all busy making jams and preserves with the vegetables, herbs and fruits we harvested form our garden. We also received lots of donations of fruit and jam jars from our amazing SKiPPS community.

We will all make cards and labels for our jam jars. They will be donated to the Sacred Heart Mission. The produce will be distributed to the vulnerable community which really need our support during these challenging times

Happy cooking and gardening.

Cheers,

Betty
