Grade 1 Fortnigho pttly Snapshot - Week 4/5
February 18th 202
Week four of school started with a quick return to remote learning for our Grade 1's. To their credit, most of them took it in their stride. Thank you for your understanding and flexibility in making this shift to remote learning at very short notice. We were very happy to return to school on Thursday!

This Snapshot will give you an outline of what your child will have learnt in the subject areas in the last week and will learn in the week ahead. We also aim to provide you with any videos or explanations you may need to practise certain skills such as the 'codes'.
Reading
This week in reading students learnt how to select a 'good fit' book. I pick stands for
I chose a book
Purpose - Why do I want to read it?
Interest - Does the book interest me.
Comprehension - Am I understanding what I am reading.
Know - Do I know most of the words.

We teach students how to select ‘good fit books’ because it's a vital life skill. Whether it be in a bookstore, school library or public library, empowering children to pick a book that they are interested in as well as one they can comprehend is vitally important to their success in reading and falling in love with reading.
In reading next week students will learn why and how they will use a Reader's Notebook.

Writing
This week in writing students have learnt some new vocabulary from a 'good fit' book they have selected at home. After learning the definitions of these words they were asked to use them in a sentence. Students also wrote a brief book review.
Next week we will use the book 'I am Human' to continue to build students vocabulary. Students will consolidate their ability to identify a fragment versus a sentence. They will also learn how fix a fragment and rearrange words to form a correct sentence.
Word Work
Students are continuing to revise the codes they learnt in Prep as well as adding new codes to their classroom working pack each week. Below is a PDF of the first 40 codes if you would like to continue revising these at homes. If you click on the code they will play the sounds each one makes.
Next week students will also be revising Rule 1: Q doesn't go anywhere without his buddy U'. Handwriting and letter formation is also a focus during these boot camp sessions. This year at BPS we are trialing print instead of Victorian Modern Cursive.
Below you will find the handwriting script and the codes for your own use at home.
During remote learning this week students have practised their Maths skills through activities on Mathletics. They also enjoyed building a tower with a variety of objects to practise counting by 1's and 10's from any point.

Next week students will learn how to display and interpret data in a graph.
This week we continued to explore our unit of inquiry Who We Are with the central idea Choices affect our health.
Students started the week by completing three activities to take care of their physical, mental and social well-being. These included a workout led by Joe Wicks, creating their own mindful colouring and playing a board game with their family. Students listened to a story called 'Feelings' and wrote and drew about four different ways they chose to be healthy in their day.

Next week students will continue to learn about the choices they make to keep them healthy.
Wellbeing
During home learning the well-being of our students was top of mind. It was great to see so many students taking part in the teacher led meetings in the mornings where they could connect with their peers.
We have also been focusing on students ability to recognise their own strengths and why this is important. Some of the strengths students identified within themselves included; organised, kind, creative, open to trying new things, caring about the environment etc.. We will move onto recognising the strengths in others and how these can help to build friendships.
