Health and Fitness

Dear Parents and Carers,

Firstly, thank you to all the families that responded to my Student Activity Survey sent out via SeeSaw towards the end of last week.  Jackson School is committed to the joint policy initiative presented by the Department of Education and Training and the Department for Community sport. I would like everyone in our Jackson School Community to familiarise themselves with the statement which can be accessed via this link:

Active schools (education.vic.gov.au)

Last year during the two coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic lock-downs, we were challenged to find new ways to be active, with Victorian students learning remotely and community sport and regular physical activity altered drastically or put on hold. We all now have an important role to play in supporting children and young people to be active, and set them up for an active life.  On a positive note however, during this time, we have also seen more families out on our streets walking and exercising together. We want to continue to encourage all Jackson families to keep up these healthy habits.  As Jackson’s PE teacher during remote learning, I had the pleasure of experiencing this first hand, with students from many of our families, taking part in the PE activities presented on-line, and doing so, supported by mothers, fathers, aunts and uncles, carers and siblings, and posting them online using our SeeSaw platform.

At Jackson, we have already begun to respond to the initiative, with a new PE teacher being appointed this year, additional Health and Fitness sessions provided to all students from Yr 3-10, along with targeted physical movement and activity interventions for students assessed as in need of additional support and a staff member appointed to drive the program’s roll-out. We have added additional staff to recess and lunch-time breaks to provide structured games and sports.

Over this last weekend, the Victorian Government launched a new component of the initiative, on the Get Active Victoria website.  The site provides resources, information and assistance aimed at getting Victorians to move more everyday by connecting with free activities available in our communities.
