LOWER SECONDARY

Green screen

As part of their Inquiry unit about Australia, our students have been using a greenscreen while reading out information they have found out about Australia. They have been using all sorts of backgrounds, some students have been standing in front of the Sydney opera house, in the Australian outback and one was standing with their head in a crocodile’s mouth. The students loved being on camera and found the activity very engaging. Here are some pictures from 7/8A & 7/8C.

UPPER SECONDARY

Year 10 participated in Food Handling Training on Wednesday. Lou Ebsary from William Angliss provided the training.

Through our training, we are another step closer to opening our café.

We covered many topics including definition of food, Kitchen vocabulary, preparing, handling and storing food properly, risk reduction, types of food contamination, the role of micro -organisms in food poisoning and the importance of personal hygiene for food handlers.

Finally, we learned about the rules in the Food Act (1984). We followed up this training with a practical session of preparing and serving food and beverages.

Here are some comments from our students:

  1. It was a good opportunity to revise our understanding about kitchen-related workplace hazards such as: physical ones including dirt, hair, stones and toothpicks. We also considered biological ones such as germs, viruses and mould and chemical ones such as – detergents, herbicides and pesticides. Finally, we also thought about cuts and burns that might occur from accident with knife, boiling water and hot oil. - Noah B

        2. If we do not take care with food safety, there will be serious consequences. Not                     only we will lose our business and jobs but also face large fines.  Customers may                    become sick or there is also possibility of deaths. -Brydee

        3. We again learnt about the importance of hand washing. Lou brought a special torch              that could show how many germs ware on our hands before and after washing. We              must remember to wash our hands very carefully without spilling water on the floor.              -Vivian

       4. We learnt how to serve cooked food in a hygienic manner and how to make                               milkshakes. We actually enjoyed the milkshake very much. -Kaylan

      5. We learnt about PPE related to kitchen work. For example: wearing proper clothing                such as shoe, cap, hair net, beard net and apron. – Mena

     6. We learnt about temperature danger zones   8

We learned many new words related to our food handling including neckerchiefs. -                Noah CW
