Luna new year celebrations

2021 Lunar New Year festive celebration was from 12 February to 26 February.

This festival has a history of more than 4000 years. The traditional ways of celebrating are widely maintained and passed on in each generation. To mark the new beginning of a year, a variety of decorations, food, symbols and ceremonies are used to ensure the coming year be filled with luck, prosperity and good health.

Like all of us, our international students faced unprecedented challenges last year and majority of them really missed home. This feeling became particularly strong during Lunar New Year. Most of the students are unable to return home to celebrate this occasion with their families and friends who are thousands of miles away.

This year we set up a luncheon to celebrate together.  Everyone was given lucky red pockets, their own lucky greeting cupcakes as well as a raffle towards the end of the luncheon. On the last day of the Lunar New year, we celebrated by eating “Tang Yuan” , symbolizing unity and wholesomeness.

These celebrations were to commemorate each student’s determination during their time here studying and as well as symbolising the appreciation of their culture. Although they are far away from home, they also have our school community and their host families supporting them here. We wish our international students a great year ahead!
