Principal's message

The Swimming Carnival was the highlight of this week as this is when the house spirit of the school comes alive. Yesterday we were treated to not only the house chants and colourful outfits of the students but we were met with a swell of enthusiasm as well.  It was all the more exciting because there were so few opportunities for us to come together as a school community in 2020. I had the most wonderful task of presenting the students with their ribbons throughout the day. Although, at times, it was a little cool for students wearing wet bathers, time and time again they would hop back in the pool for another race. I thank Ilana Parker for her organisation of the day, the support team who set up early in the morning and stayed behind to pack up and finally to the students for really investing positively in this day.

On Friday 19 February the Year 12 students attended their Ball. The girls had a terrific time. The outfits were beautiful and varied and the girls really made the most of the evening by dancing the night away. Our teachers (including myself) were also up on the dance floor and we had a lovely evening celebrating the beginning of their last year at the college. You may remember that we were unable to have the Year 12 Ball due to the COVID-19 shutdown in 2020 so it was all the more treasured.

This year the priorities of all government schools are in the areas of learning catch-up and extension; happy, active and healthy kids; and connected schools. I am really excited about these priorities as they mirror what MGSC is all about. As mentioned in my  Compass newsfeed to parents earlier this week, we will be implementing the Tutor Learning Initiative shortly which will target students who would benefit from additional support in the areas of English and Mathematics. Last year was challenging for students as they adjusted to learning remotely. This year we will also be maximising the opportunities for students to be active participants in the co-curricular and extra-curricular program through their participation in events such as the swimming and athletics carnival. I hope to also have many other opportunities for parents and carers to be involved in their daughters’ learning.

The first of the opportuntities for parents and carers to interact with the school was our PFA AGM on Tuesday night.  MGSC has always been fortunate to have parents who seek to be engaged in the school through joining the PFA. This was a terrific meeting and I really enjoyed touching base with our new parents and welcoming them into this positive group. The PFA support the school by operating the second-hand uniform shop, sponsoring awards for the presentation night, supporting the Annual Art Exhibition and so much more. It is not too late to express your interest in joining this group. You can express your interest through adding your name to this Parent Survey
