MEET A SCIENTIST
On the 11th February we held a ‘Meet a Scientist’ event which was hosted by The Royal Women’s Hospital. The Women’s is dedicated to inspiring the next generation of women to pursue a career in science, nursing, midwifery, allied health, biomedical engineering, medicine and research. The United Nations International Day of Women and Girls in Science recognises the critical role women and girls play in science and technology. At present, less than 30 per cent of researchers worldwide are women and only 30 per cent of all female students select STEM-related fields in higher education. Long-standing biases and gender stereotypes are steering girls and women away from science-related fields. This event was aimed to inspire students to pursue a career in science, help them understand the paths and opportunities through higher education and beyond, and hear directly from research scientists about their own journey, their advice and their achievements. We had 19 students attend the event and they heard from inspiring speakers in the field of neonatal health, midwifery, child physiotherapy and reproductive science. The students thoroughly enjoyed this event.
FEDERATION UNIVERSITY – ADVANCE TO UNIVERSITY STUDENTS
Our ‘Advance to University’ students attended an orientation day at Federation University Gippsland Campus on Wednesday 24th February. Students were welcomed, given an overview of the campus and the Advance to University program by the program coordinator. The next presentation provided students with information about the Library, what resources they can use to support their studies and an overview of the library borrowing system. Students also learned more about ‘Moodle’ which is their online learning platform. This platform also offers study skills information, study skills support and resources. After a brief break for lunch which was had in the cafeteria, students then participated in a campus tour. Although the tour was brief due to COVID restrictions, students still gained a good insight into the campus layout. To conclude the day, students moved into their field of study to meet with their academic lecturers. This small group setting allowed students to ask lots of questions and hear about their units of study. It was a great day with students commenting how much they enjoyed the day and found it to be very valuable. When asked what could be improved, they said ‘they wished it had have been longer!’
VCE and CAREERS EXPO
On Thursday 29th April Year 12 students (both VCE and VCAL) will attend Australia’s biggest VCE and Careers Expo, held at Caulfield Racecourse. The event will have 150 exhibitors which include Universities, TAFEs, training courses and industries. Information and resources for the VCE, career advice, study advice, employment advice and opportunities, apprenticeship and traineeship advice, international exchange and gap year programs and more. This is a great opportunity for our Year 12 students to gain valuable information into their pathways beyond Lowanna College. We will travel via train to the event and the cost will be $25 per student. Permission notices will be sent home next week.
SENIOR VCAL – Work related skills
On Tuesday our Senior VCAL work related skills group had a guest speaker come along to chat with them about the importance of work placement, building their employability skills and the realities of the working world they are about to enter. Tom Hallinan, Cluster Director of the Headstart Program (apprenticeships/traineeships) spoke with students about employer expectations and what students need to ensure they are doing to give themselves the best chance of employment at the end of 2021. Tom has a wealth of experience working with industries and local businesses, so he has a great understanding of what employers expect from people entering the workforce. Students responded positively to this session and will continue these discussions within their class.
MY CAREER INSIGHT (Year 9 Morrisby Career Discovery tool)
My Career Insights is a program for all Year 9 students in Victorian Government secondary schools. My Career Insights is designed to help students discover, develop and drive their career planning. It's a unique opportunity for them to learn more about their strengths and abilities, while exploring potential career options – giving them the confidence to start taking control of their future.
Students will be given the opportunity to complete a series of questionnaires and quizzes designed to help them learn more about themselves and their values, preferences, skills and strengths. This is called a Morrisby profile. Once students complete their Morrisby profile, they will have an individualised 30-minute career discussion with an external independent Careers Counsellor. This may be face to face at school or through a video conference.
The Year 9 cohort will complete the Morrisby profile careers online assessment during the week of Monday 26th April – Friday 30th April.
Students will be given permission notices to take home for parents/guardians to complete.
