What’s happening in Maths at LC?

There has been lots of positive changes in Maths this year! We welcome Monica Planko, Brandon Gosens and Acacia Novak to the Maths team. Lots of planning and teamwork has been done by our staff and our VCE teachers have already attended professional development! Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher.

What’s happening in our classrooms?

The Year 7 students are currently revising their negative number skills. Building on their prior knowledge, students are learning how to multiply and divide using positive and negative integers and applying their BIDMAS skills. We have been lucky enough to have a member of our Numeracy Team create YouTube clips explaining each skill and providing examples. The links for Year 7 are below – they are a great tool for students to watch at home and may assist with understanding.

The Year 8 students are revising key skills related to the topic of algebra. Students have been revising BIDMAS,  substituting numerical values for pronumerals (letters), simplifying by identifying like terms and expanding brackets. Students will move on to the new topic of factorizing shortly! The Year students are also lucky to have revision video clips made exclusively for them by our Numeracy Enrichment Team. Essential Assessment

All our Year 7 and 8 students and students in the Year 9 and 10 Targeted Maths classes have access to Essential Assessment. The electronic program is designed for students to practise key skills at the level they are learning at. All students have been given their login details and the program can be accessed at home. Email the classroom teacher if there are login issues.

Numeracy Enrichment Program (NEP)

We all know that we spent large chunks of Term 2 and 3 in 2020 at home learning remotely. During this time our Numeracy Team set up a Numeracy Enrichment Program (NEP), supporting students with their learning in Maths. During Term 4, schools across Victoria have been focused on supporting students’ mental health and wellbeing, in addition to assisting students to readjust to on-site learning. Teachers have also been focusing on assessing student learning, addressing individual learning gaps and identifying those students who need extra support for their learning, using classroom-based observation and assessments.

We know that the remote learning experience was different for every student. While some students thrived, some students may not have engaged as fully with remote learning. For most of our students, regular high-quality teaching in 2021 will be enough to help them progress to the expected level of learning. Some students will benefit from additional intensive learning support in 2021.

We have received funding to build on the program we set up last year and have a range of tutors who will support students. Our tutors for 2021 are Daniel Board, Grace Matthews, Grace Wilson, Ben van Dyk, Lochie Francis, Lauren Akers and Mugsy Mootka. We look forward to support they will offer our students with their numeracy skills. More details to come!

On March 14th it is the International Day of Mathematics (IDM)! The theme for 2021 is ‘Mathematics for a Better World’. The organisation has created a poster competition for people to enter. Head to https://www.idm314.org/2021-poster-challenge.html - participants have up until March the 1st to enter.
