DEPUTY PRINCIPAL'S  REPORT

Maths Games and Maths Olympiad

This year we have entered our Year 5 & 6 children into the Maths Games and Maths Olympiad.  Every year, schools from all over Australia, New Zealand and other neighbouring countries take part in the APSMO Maths Games and Maths Olympiads.   2021 is the seventh year that the Maths Games is being offered.

The Maths Olympiad and Maths Games are an ideal complement to the school curriculum. The main aims of the competitions are to:

  • Introduce students to important mathematical concepts
  • Teach major strategies and develop flexibility for problem solving
  • Foster creativity and ingenuity and strengthen intuition
  • Stimulate enthusiasm and enjoyment of mathematics
  • Provide for the satisfaction, joy and thrill of meeting challenges

The Maths Games consists of five separate contests held approximately six weeks apart between March and September.  The overall aim is to encourage students to develop important mathematical problem solving skills in an enjoyable, non‐threatening environment.

The Olympiads consist of five separate contests held approximately one month apart between March and September.  The overall aim is to encourage students to develop important mathematical problem solving skills in an enjoyable environment.

Although students are competing against other members of their class and teams from other schools, they are primarily competing against themselves.  As each of the contests is a month apart, there is plenty of time for practice and improvement.
