Recreation News

We have really been encouraging these fabulous teens to Recreation on the weekends this term and we feel like we have made some progress in this area.  Participation in our beach trips has grown this term, and changing them to afternoons has allowed our boarders to sleep in if they desire.  This little adjustment and the regularity of Emu Point and Middleton Beach trips has meant we have had many more going to the beach every Sunday afternoon.  Students don’t have to swim, they can simply choose to get off campus, go for walk, play beach volleyball or cricket, sit and relax or buy a milkshake or an ice cream. We will continue this in Term Two when the weather permits.

We are also organising more craft, board games, wood work, table tennis and painting opportunities in the boarding houses for students to do in their free time. We have seen some lovely artworks painted in Breaksea, a competitive chess competition in Eclipse, wooden pieces from Anchorage and creative craft projects in Endeavour.

Mr Rice took the Eclipse boys canoeing on the weekend and he has been enjoying spending time with all boarders on the weekends in many varied activities.

We are very close to employing a new Recreation Administrator. This is a new role to organise all of the recreation during the week and then our supervisors carry out all the activities in a safe and fun way. We will get a recreation schedule on MyGSG early in Term Two for parents to encourage students to attend. Recreation is also put on REACH every week for the boarders to book.  We encourage them to accept or decline each Recreation activity by Thursday evening, enabling us to plan staffing and catering for the weekend.

Masterchef

The annual Masterchef event was held on Friday night of Week Eight.  Many of our boarders participated in this annual Term One event. This time it even coincided with the Taste Great Southern Food Festival. Each team was a mixed group of boarders from different houses, with the requirement to prepare a main and a dessert. Once teams were formed, the menu planning commenced.

Two team members were bussed to Woolworths to buy the necessary ingredients within the budget, the rest of the team remained at boarding to get the equipment required ready in preparation for their return.

On their return, each team cooked, plated up and served the meals to the team of judges. Seven teams contested with a wide selection of meals prepared including kebabs, sausages, pasta, pizza and burgers. For dessert, the judges were wowed with ice cream slice, pavlovas, smores and cakes.   This evening was a great opportunity for the boarders to mix within houses and to compete in a fun event.

The winning team consisted of Brendan Quick, Pierce Newman, Zaydee Kiagoes, Kate Squibb, Lahnee Harries, Sophie Harris, Audrey Cherry and McKayla Ettridge.

Thank you to our brave judges Jaydn Steele, Sienna Ball, Ella Sloss and Millie Boetel.
