ENROLMENTS: K-6 places now available for 2022

We have places in every grade for new students in 2022. If you know anyone thinking about enrolling their child please ask them to contact Mrs Charadia or direct them to find the enrolment form and information on the school website.

Playgroup 2021/22

This week we welcomed our new kindergarten students for 2022 to St Joseph's Bulli. The playgroup allows the children to meet future classmates, make connections, and get to know their new learning environment and the school playground. The playgroup also allows the children to experience some school routines like "Munch and Sip" and to meet their new teachers.

We are looking forward to seeing these students again next week for more fun play.

Keeping Children Focused In Term 4

As this term progresses the children will become excited about the approaching Advent and Christmas seasons. It is very important that the children remain focused and settled throughout Term 4. When the children begin to bring Christmas cards, candy canes and the like to school too early they tend to tune out.

It is for this reason and the fact that waiting is a part of our Catholic tradition within the season of Advent, that the children may only begin to bring Christmas cards, candy canes etc. for their classmates from the beginning of Week 10 – Monday 6 December.

Semester 2 Reports

Semester 2 student reports will be available via the COMPASS Parent Portal on Tuesday 7 December after 3:00 pm.

2021 School Fees

Thank you to all families who finalised their 2021 School Fees by the due date.  A Compass message was sent to all those with outstanding balances. If you have an outstanding balance, please ensure these have a zero balance by Wednesday 1 December.

Should you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact the school office.

SJB’s Got Talent 2021 (ONLINE!)

This year during Weeks 10 and 11, we will again be holding SJB’s Got Talent-Showcase where students are given an opportunity to share their creative talents with the school community.

Due to COVID restrictions, the showcase will run differently as we are unable to have students gather in the hall. This year it will be an ONLINE showcase and we are now inviting students to submit a video recording of their item by Friday 3rd December. This recording will then be added to this year's 'SJB's Got Talent Online' that will run throughout Week 10/11 for students to view in their classrooms.

Students are welcome to film their performance at home or at school with teacher permission and supervision (group singing is not permitted unless singing with a sibling at home). I invite all students with a talent (eg, dancing, singing, playing an instrument, magic trick, comedy act) to submit an entry. Please note that not all submissions will make the Online performances (it all depends on the number of entries received and the quality of the performances)

KEY POINTS regarding SJB's Got Talent Online

  • SJB's Got Talent Online will take place throughout Wk 10 & 11 for students to view in their classrooms
  • Videos must be submitted by Friday 3rd December (these can be shared via SeeSaw, drive, email to info@sjbdow.catholic.edu.au, airdrop or USB drive)
  • Performances may be recorded at home or at school. Please ensure that songs used are appropriate (with no offensive language or messages) and also be mindful of costume/clothing worn.
  • Individual or group performances are accepted but MUST be students in the same cohort (group singing not permitted) unless recording at home with a sibling.
  • Performances must not be longer than 4 minutes
  • The SJB's Got Talent Online will be shared with parents via SeeSaw and newsletter in Wk 11 and highlights via our FaceBook Page

For more information please contact Mr Aguilera or your child's teacher.

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School - 2021 Grade Spelling Bee Competition

What is a Spelling Bee?

A spelling bee is a contest in which participants are asked to spell words in a round-robin format where each person gets a turn to spell a word.

Students will receive a list of words to practice before an in class competition will be held to determine the 3 participants for the Grade Spelling Bee Competition.

The Grade Spelling Bee Competition will be held in Wk 9. An unseen word list will be used for the Grade Spelling Bee Competition.

Say it, spell it, say it!

In the Grade Spelling Bee competition, the teacher will pronounce the word and use it in a sentence. The competitor (participant) will then say the word, spell the word, and say the word again. For example, “Snowflakes… S-N-O-W-F-L-A-K-E-S….. Snowflakes.” A scribe will write the letters/word as the competitor says them.

Rules

  • A participant is eliminated from the grade oral spelling bee competition as soon as they incorrectly spell a word.
  • Once the word is said at the end of a participant’s attempt, they cannot go back and self-correct.
  • Upper case letters are required  as in Wollongong – Capital W-o-l-l (double –l-)
  • If a competitor spells a word incorrectly but “self-corrects” within 10/15 seconds or before saying the word the second time that participant remains in the game.
  • The count begins after the participant says the first letter of the word he/she is attempting. If a word is not spelled out within the 15 seconds (Senior) and 10 seconds (Juniors), that competitor no longer remains in the competition.
  • It is required that a competitor says the word at the end to show they are finished spelling. For example: “fuel   f-u-e-l   fuel”
  • The teacher’s decision is final.

Spelling Bee Timeline

Week 8 - Class competitions will be held to select 3 participants for the grade oral spelling bee competition.

Week 9 -  Grade Spelling Bee Competition will take place using an unseen word list.

Week 10 - Spelling Champions from each grade will be listed in the newsletter and awards handed out to these students at Friday’s assembly.

Last Day of 2021 School Year

The last day of the school year for students is Tuesday 14 December.

2022 School Student Travel

Applications for student travel in 2022 are now open. From October 2021, information on the School Student Transport Scheme and the School Portal will be available via Transport for NSW.

Students who need a School Opal card or travel pass for 2022 can apply now. Parents/students will need to submit a new application if they are applying for a school travel pass for the first time, or if they are requesting an additional travel entitlement as a result of a new shared parental responsibility situation.

Students who change address, school, campus location, or who have repeated a year or received an expiry notification from Transport for NSW for their school travel entitlement should renew or update their details before the end of term 4. This will ensure that schools can endorse applications and current entitlements are updated and remain valid. School Opal cardholders will have the changes applied to their existing card.

Students who have an entitlement approved under a medical condition that is due to expire will receive a notification advising them to re-apply.

Term Bus Pass holders will also receive a notification to re-apply.

Students in the Opal network applying for an Opal card (including a Term Bus Pass) for the first time will receive their Student Opal card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out from January 2022.

Students living in rural and regional areas should receive their travel pass at the start of the new school year from their nominated transport operator.
