Mrs Fiona McAuliffe

In the coming weeks we will be celebrating what we have achieved and accomplished in 2021. There will be an acknowledgement in class groups of the relationships that have been formed, and the Awards Ceremonies will acknowledge completion of studies and success in subjects. I am looking forward to being a part of these events but as I did not get to see the Junior Years Concert last year, I am looking forward to this the most!

When I reflect on this academic year and the things, we, as a school, have been aiming to achieve I would like to start with a quotation:

“One of the most important gifts we can offer young children is a positive view of themselves. Without this gift they will flounder throughout life and be constantly seeking re-assurance from others, as they cannot see it from within.” (‘Young Children’s Personal, Social and Emotional Development’ by M. Dowling).

The world around our children continues to change more rapidly than it ever has before, and we have seen changes we did not predict. Our youngest children are competent with equipment and technology that did not exist five years ago, conceived, and developed almost alongside the children themselves. By the time our Year 6 students graduate from university in just 10 years’ time the cycle of change will have gained further momentum. By the time our Prep children reach 21, who knows what experiences the world will be offering and what challenges they will need to face.

Good or bad, our children need to be equipped for all experiences and having a positive view of themselves will be paramount to them succeeding in this rapidly changing world. Sometimes they need us to help them see that positive view of themselves. They need to be challenged in their work ethic and their studies to realise a sense of achievement and self-worth. We need to show them what they can do and ensure we acknowledge it. We should help each child celebrate their own talents and we should show them how to celebrate the talents in others. The gift we give them then is not just a positive view of themselves, but also the ability to provide this gift for others.

Heroes take journeys, confront dragons, and discover the treasure of their true selves.
