Young Writers Program

Vermont Secondary College

November is National Novel Writing Month – or NaNoWriMo for short. NaNoWriMo is “a non-profit organisation that believes in the transformational power of creativity…providing the structure, community, and encouragement to help people find their voices, achieve creative goals, and build new worlds—on and off the page”. Started in 1999, the idea is to write a novel in a month: not prose polished to perfection, just raw words. And lots of them.

There’s a Young Writers’ Program, and this year, VSC took part for the first time. With just two days’ notice, eighteen students from Years 7, 8 and 9 committed themselves to the program. The library set aside a space where we could meet every lunchtime and take pleasure in writing and each other’s company. Calling ourselves the Society of Pen and Paper, some of us wrote poetry, some wrote short stories, and some worked on a novel. We all set word targets at the start of the month. Some of us even met them! The grand total of words produced stood at 126,084 when we packed our iPads and laptops away at 1.45p.m. on Tuesday November 30th!!

But we’re not done yet! We will be reconvening in 2022 so we can carry on writing.

Please mentally congratulate our amazing, talented and committed young writers:
