FIRST AID

A fantastic group of Year 10 and 11 students participated in the two-day course to learn basic skills in first aid including allergies and CPR. The Surf Life Saving trainer could only give the Lake Illawarra High School students the highest praise for their polite manner, keen interest and high participation levels. Well done for a fantastic effort. Thank you, Mr Carrett, for looking after the group as you went through the course yourself.

YOUTH FRONTIERS

A group of five Year 9 boys, Mason Clark, Baylen Russell, Brodie Winn, Alex Fletcher and Tyler Grindle have been involved with a mentoring program called Youth Frontiers. Youth Frontiers is a NSW Government funded youth mentoring program in which volunteer mentors work with a young person over a six month period to develop a community activity. The aim of this program is to guide a young person to make a positive contribution to their community and in doing so further develop their confidence and learn new skills.

Unfortunately, due to COVID, the program has not been able to run in its usual format. However, the boys have been meeting weekly with their mentors for the past six months. One of their initiatives was to organise a clean-up of the local lake foreshore. The five boys and a few of their friends spent a Tuesday morning cleaning an area along the lake opposite Lake Illawarra High School, collecting a number of bags of rubbish and doing their little bit to protect the wonderful environment in which we live.

The boys have thoroughly enjoyed the Youth Frontiers Program and have received a certificate to recognise their completion of the program.

Well done boys!

LINKS TO LEARNING

The LINKS to Learning program has been running for over 20 years in the Illawarra via the Multi-Cultural Communities Council of Illawarra (MCCI). Six schools in the local Illawarra area participate in the program. The program runs for 36 weeks of the year, one day a week. Unfortunately, due to COVID, the program was unable to run in its usual format and there were a number of disruptions and changes to the program.

Despite this, students from Lake Illawarra High were able to complete a number of courses, with the major one being their Retail Course. They were also able to attend a number of excursions and were able to volunteer their time to help improve their community.

The year finished with a very modified graduation at the PCYC where they were able to participate in a drumming workshop and celebrate their achievements with their peers.

Well done to all involved!

Mr Chaseling

YEAR 11 INTERVIEWS

During this term, I have been interviewing students in preparation for the HSC. This is a long process but rewarding with priority given to students dropping a subject.

All students who completed their interviews have now an updated electronic resume and transition plan beyond the HSC. I wish the new Year 12 all the best as they start their final year at Lake Illawarra HS.

GET A PART-TIME JOB

Lots of people are looking for employment at this time of year – either a part-time job for the summer school holidays, or full-time employment as a school leaver or gap year student, or even as a graduate!

Depending on where you live might influence the availability of positions, but the retail and hospitality industries tend to be busy over the Christmas and summer period especially! So… to find a job:

  • Update your resume – see your school careers website where you will find a      template to do this under the ‘student secure area’.
  • Cold canvass potential employers – introduce yourself to prospective employers who might need extra help over the busy holiday period –       be sure to leave your resume and contact details!
  • Respond to advertisements in the Lake Illawarra Highs School Careers or company websites.

GO VOLUNTEERING

There are lots of opportunities to be a volunteer in your local community, such as Rural Fire Service, St John Ambulance, Surf Lifesaving Society and surf clubs, WIRES, Meals on Wheels, Red Cross, Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul shops.

Why being a VOLUNTEER in the COMMUNITY is important:

* increases self-confidence. * makes you happy!* is great for career and job prospects* helps you demonstrate compassion and commitment* develops skills to add to your resume
