Grade 6 Fortnightly Snapshot
Term 1, Week 2
Dear parents,
Welcome back to Term 1 of 2021. Grade 6 is an exciting year and it has been delightful to see the cohort begin the year showing responsibility and enthusiasm.
All families should have received a copy of the BYOD iPad Agreement. Teachers will be conducting spot checks and ensuring that students are following this agreement at all times. Please note that messaging notifications must be turned off at school. If you need to contact your child while they are at school, this communication needs to go through the school office.
Please note that school photos are on Wednesday 10th and Thursday 11th of February. Parent-teacher interviews are now open for booking on Compass.
All grade 6 students will be members of a leadership team. The leadership process for captaincies is underway. It has so far included application letters written in Grade 5 and leadership challenges in both Grade 5 and 6. Students who have been successful in both of these rounds have been notified and will be presenting speeches in front of the cohort this Wednesday and Thursday. Following this, a group of students will be interviewed as the final stage.
All grade 6 students will state their preferences for leadership teams. The 2021 leadership teams will be:
Nude Food Team
Green Team
Digital Learning Team
Arts Team
Junior Yard Duty Team
School Environment Team
Learning Clubs Team
Wellbeing Team
Sports Team
School & House Captains
Grade 6 classes have begun setting up our classroom libraries. Students have been reflecting on themselves as a reader by identifying titles, authors and genres that interest them and considering how they choose books. We are continuing to design and sort our classroom library.
We are beginning writing with a grammar focus. Students are revising and consolidating their knowledge of sentence structure including simple, compound and complex sentences. Students will be identifying which clauses contain a complete thought and which do not make sense on their own. We will also be consolidating correct use of commas.
During Mathematics students will be learning about place value. We will be focusing on developing number sense, including the ability to visualise and talk comfortably about numbers, take numbers apart and put them back together in different ways, compute mentally and relate numbers to real life. We will be covering:
Our first unit of inquiry is our How We Organise Ourselves unit with the central idea "Leaders Shape Communities". This is an inquiry into decision making processes, the impact of leaders, and the roles and responsibilities of citizens. Students will be learning about government as well as leadership and decision-making in action so that they can apply their knowledge and skills as Grade 6 leaders.
Grade 6 classes are using Circles as a way of getting to know each other, identifying learning strengths and preferences and to provide a platform for social and emotional learning in a timely manner. All classes have used circles to explore the theme of resilience.
