VCE/VCAL Early Commencement Program

During the VCE/VCAL Early Commencement Program, the students had an array of interesting experiences and valuable opportunities to broaden their horizons. The students had numerous guest speakers, including presenters from the Young Workers Centre, the Hume Whittlesea LLEN, Kangan TAFE Next Step Jobs and Skills Program, representatives from the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and Mr Glenn Hudson (Environment Programs Assistant at Aitken College). A big thank you to the students’ Work-Related Skills teacher, Mrs Mona Harsan, for organising all the guest speakers.

During Early Commencement, one of the Numeracy tasks for students was to construct a basic four-wheeled solar car, which is driven by an electric motor and powered by a purpose-designed solar panel. The power to the wheels is transferred from the motor by gears. The solar panel consists of two sections, each of 1.5 volts and 0.2 amps, which can be connected in series or parallel. Students were able to design an individual vehicle to suit their own needs and then test it out to see its driving operation.
