Understanding your child's Report

The following attachment has been included with your child's report this Semester.

Year Six News

This term our main focus has been preparing the children to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.  In class we used the Pentecost story to define the role the Holy Spirit plays in our life which helps us to continue spreading the message of Jesus Christ.

In the English Learning Area, the children have continued to write in a variety of formats such as narratives, letters and innovative texts, in the form of a historical narrative, to name just a few. The students will build upon their previous skills to construct strong persuasive arguments and creative narratives. There is a strong focus on what improves writing and using the editing process to make changes. They will be exposed to a variety of text types, in particular narratives and persuasive texts. The children will focus on reading with improved fluency and expression to enhance and contribute to deeper understanding of what they read.

In the Mathematics Learning Area, we expect the children to continue to use Mathletics to assist with their individualised learning.  Mathletics is being used both in class and as a part of homework to help reinforce topics covered in class.  We take the opportunity to remind you that Mathletics Live and the links to Rainforest Mathematics assist with the development of children’s mathematical concepts.

Our integrated focus this term has explored citizenship, different cultures within Australian Society and understanding the many impacts and roles migrants had in establishing Australia. We have studied the many events in Australia’s history that have impacted and changed our country to what it is today.  Our country is an amazing, vibrant and a multicultural place and it is important that the children understand this and know they are lucky to live in such a place and to share it with many different cultures.

Our technology focus for this semester focused on the children learning how to code. They were provided the opportunity to code using their iPad and also participated in ‘coding unplugged’ which means without the use of technology. Coding is the language of computers and it will play a big part in the future career paths of our children.

We have continued to use the available technology to support and extend the children’s learning on a daily basis.  It is great to see the children grow in their understanding and responsibility and use the technical devices to enhance their learning.  We spent time discussing digital citizenship and are continuing to encourage children to speak openly to their parents about their technology usage. The Technology Room has been a wonderful environment for the children to be innovative and creative.

This term we ventured to Forest Edge in Waroona for our Year 6 School Camp. This was a great opportunity for the children to consolidate their relationships with each other, take safe risks and put themselves out of their comfort zone when undertaking activities. Camp will provide many opportunities for personal growth and gives the children a better understanding of self as they spend three days participating and socialising in activities far removed from their normal everyday life.

Mathematical Language

One of the most valuable ways that parents can support their child’s mathematical development is to use mathematical language in daily conversations. Some of the situations that parents can verbalise their mathematical thinking include:

Setting the table (multiplication)

Sharing food (division)

Counting as children dress in the morning (ordinal numbers)

Locating items (positional language)

Discussing the days of the week, time on the clock, number of sleeps until a birthday (measurement)

Talking about weight, volume and capacity when cooking or shopping (measurement)

Putting food away from the supermarket (sorting and classifying)

Finding numerals in the environment (number knowledge)

Writing a lunch orders, calculating total costs and counting out amounts (money)

Reading large numbers on road or house signs (place value)

Cooking (fractions)

Describing objects (shape)

Discussing the weather (probability)

Reading public timetables and organising their own timetable (measurement)

Reading picture books with young children that are rich in number (number knowledge)

Seasons for Growth 2017

It is not a safe area for students to be at anytime, due to the amount of traffic and delivery trucks using the space. Please use the designated pick up and drop off areas.

LOVEGROVE WAY

Please consider others and park correctly along Lovegrove Way to help with the flow of traffic in that area.

Discipleship

Feastday of St Aloyisius Gonzaga 21 June

Do your parents have plans for you? As soon as Aloysius was born, his parents began planning for his future. His mother wanted him to be a priest. His father was determined to have his oldest son become a military leader or famous political figure—anything but a priest.

At the age of five, Aloysius was sent to a military camp to get started on his career. His father must have been very pleased to see his son marching at the head of the platoon of soldiers around the campgrounds. His mother and his tutor were extremely displeased; however, when Aloysius came home using the rough, coarse language of the camp. At the age of seven, Aloysius received a special insight from God. While other boys were dreaming about being military heroes or heads of wealthy estates, Aloysius thought of other matters. He decided to become a saint, and he began acting on that decision. He prayed long hours at night and fasted several times a week.

While he was on a visit to Spain with his parents, Aloysius read the lives of saintly Jesuit missionaries, and he decided to become a Jesuit. His father and some other relatives tried hard to change his mind. It was a fierce battle of wills, but after several years, Aloysius won. With his father’s permission, Aloysius gave his large inheritance to his brother and joined the Jesuit order at 17 years of age. The novice director, who was in charge of training Aloysius, told him to cut down on his long hours of prayer and to give up some of his fasting and other penances. Aloysius obeyed willingly. He understood that obedience was better than “doing his own thing.”

When Aloysius was 23, a serious epidemic broke out in Rome. Aloysius volunteered at once to help in the hospital. At that time hospitals were not the clean, orderly places with which we are familiar today. It was very easy to catch an illness. That is what happened; Aloysius became very ill. No medicine could help him. Aloysius was not afraid to die.

Aloysius shows that young people are not too young to become saints. During his life he had focused on doing what God wanted—serving and loving God and his neighbor.

POPE FRANCIS SPEAKS

"I invite all Christians, everywhere, at this very moment, to a renewed personal encounter with Jesus Christ, or at least an openness to letting him encounter them; I ask all of you to do this unfailingly each day. No one should think that this invitation is not meant for him or her, since "no one is excluded from the joy brought by the Lord". The Lord does not disappoint those who take this risk; whenever we take a step towards Jesus, we come to realise that he is already there, waiting for us with open arms."

(From The Joy of the Gospel (Evangelii Gaudium) by Pope Francis #3)

What's shopping got to do with faith?

"Sometimes I almost scream with fright!"

Mary MacKillop 1870

As a shopper, you’ve probably met check-out staff who were quite affable, but not so efficient. Remember your frustration as simple procedures seemed to take ages?  You tried to keep calm and remain present.  Phew!  That was close!  Then a satisfying visit to the bank?  I don’t think so!  Only one teller on duty and a very long queue.  It’s only necessity that keeps us going back.

Like Mary MacKillop, we come across things that can make us almost scream, whether from annoyance, frustration or fear.  These are our growth times, if we can just identify them.

"God alone knows what is best for us"

Mary MacKillop 1870

Rather than resisting, we can see these occasions as part of our search for God, the Ground of our life. Mary reassures us that God’s presence is always there, amidst the mess and confusion.

"We may walk lovingly in God’s presence

in the midst of the most trying occupations"

Mary MacKillop 1870

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."

(Psalm 46:1)
