Monash Waverley Division Championships

On 19 July the Jells Park footy team travelled to Oakleigh and played in the Monash Waverley Division Championships. We played four games with the winner being the team on top of the ladder after playing each other. It was a cold and windy day but our Jells Park kids got over it and put up a great fight.

In our first game we came up against Huntingtower and we all played really well beating them 59 to 0. In our second game we had a much harder challenge against the undefeated Holy Family. We were all put to the test but fought beautifully in the second half after letting them have a lead in the first half. Everyone played amazingly but there were a few stand outs with Mitch H scoring 2 late goals that fired everybody up and Pat W took an amazing mark and kicked the sealer. We beat Holy Family 22 to 9. In the third match we came up against our biggest threat, Mt Waverley. In the first half we did great, kicking into the strong wind and keeping the scores level at half time. We were all pumped up knowing we had the wind to our advantage and came out all guns blazing. We kicked 1 goal 1 keeping them score less in the second half. We beat Mt. Waverley  13 to 6.

Our hopes were high against Mt. Scopus for the flag in our final game. Victory would see us named Division champions. With the wind, in the first half we got caught up in all the hype and didn’t play well and were down by 2 goals. At half time we realized we didn’t come this far to lose.  In the second half, we were kicking into the wind so it was going to be a challenge. We came out all fired up and kicked the first goal to gain momentum. We put on a show kicking 3 more goals and keeping them goalless to secure the flag.

Now on August 1, we are going to Blackburn to try our hardest at the Regional Championships. We would like to thank all of the parent helpers and supporters, braving the cold, to come and drive us down to Oakleigh and cheer us on. We would also like to give a special mention to our great teacher Mr. Jenkins for coaching us throughout the season and teaching us the wonderful art of A.F.L .
