College Semester 2 Calendar
Child Protection
Following the introduction of the Child Safe Standards and Ministerial Order 870 in 2016, the Victorian Parliament has introduced new legislative requirements, which impact schools and other organisations responsible for the care and protection of children.
In 2017, three new laws take effect;
- The new Victorian Reportable Conduct Scheme (the Reportable Conduct Scheme) commences 1 July 2017;
- Schools must report allegations of misconduct to the Victorian Commission for Children and Young People (the Commission).
- The Commission has the power to share information with other organisations such as Working With Children Check (WWCC) Unit and Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT)
- Complements Mandatory reporting obligations
- Compliance with this scheme will enable schools to better identify and reduce risk of child abuse and respond to allegations of child abuse or misconduct involving children.
- Changes to definitions contained in the Working with Children Check (WWCC) requirements effective from 1 August 2017;
- ‘direct contact’ expanded to ensure that people engaging in child-related work that involves physical contact, face to face contact, written, telephone or oral communication, or electronic contact are required to obtain a WWCC.
- Under ‘child-related work’, there is no distinction made between supervised or unsupervised contact with children.
- A new Duty of Care to Protect Child Abuse effective 1 July 2017.
- The Wrongs Act 1958 (Vic) (Wrongs Act) was amended to impose a new duty of care on organisations exercising care, supervision or authority over children.
- Schools must take “reasonable precautions” to prevent the physical or sexual abuse of a student by an individual associated with the school.
- Schools must be aware of what taking ‘’reasonable precautions’’ means in practice.
Catholic Regional College Sydenham has zero tolerance for child abuse and is committed to the protection of all children from all forms of child abuse.
If you have a belief or suspicion that a child is being, or has been, subjected to any form of abuse you must contact the Victorian Child Protection Service or, where you need guidance on making a report or have questions regarding child safety, contact the College's appointed Child Safety Officer, Naomi Bartley on 9361 0000. Help your child manage stress and anxiety
Upon the opening of this Semester’s parent teacher interviews, many families will notice a class listed as ‘College Psychologist is now available in the interview schedule. This has been assigned to all students as an optional, proactive measure to assist families in managing students' health and wellbeing. The College psychologists will be available for short consultations during which, parents and students can ask questions and seek advice about any general issues affecting adolescents, such as stress management, anxiety, and maintaining wellbeing. For issues that are more personal and private in nature, a basic introduction is welcomed at interviews, where a longer appointment can then be scheduled for another convenient time.
