Principal's Report
Principal's Report
Well, Term Two is well and truly in full swing with many opportunities for students to experience a wide variety of experiences.
I hope many of you saw the WIN news report about the Western Dance Camp here at Cowra High. I was not surprised by the quality of the program our Dance Teacher Mrs Alison Buckley organised for Dance students from across the entire Western Region. We had students travelling from as far as Cobar and they got to experience instruction not only from local Dance teachers, but also three choreographers travelling from Sydney, Melbourne and Japan. Judging from the enthusiasm I witnessed at their final performance, I think it is safe to say the students loved every moment. I thank Mrs Buckley and her dedicated team of helpers who did everything from driving the shuttle bus to organising meals. Also a very big thank you to all the parents who travelled the distances to make this happen and those who kindly billeted students. Without your support, these events would be lost to our country students.
Following on from a very successful Dance Camp was our success in the Cowra Eisteddfod. It was very pleasing to have so many students participating in a wide variety of performing arts. We had students performing in various Drama, Choir, Dance and Musical categories, with much success. I particularly congratulate our Drama students who came away with a “very” Highly Commended and a First Place. Outstanding!!
As well as the Performing Arts, we have also had some big successes on the sporting field. Last week our 15 years boys Rugby League team played in the first round of the Tom Kemp Cup here at Cowra against Dubbo College South Campus. I think we were all greatly surprised by how convincingly they came out as victors in the match. This speaks well for the next round. Well done boys and good luck.
The game also served as the opener to the Buckley Shield finals, also against Dubbo College South Campus. This was a closer match with our boys greatly outsized by the Dubbo team. By playing smart and determined football, the boys showed what they were made of winning the match and becoming the Western Region Champions. Congratulations boys.
Last Wednesday Cowra High held its first Cross Country event in many years. Although a little chilly on the day, I believe it was a great success and look forward to watching this grow as an annual event. I congratulate all the students who took part, whether as a competitive runner or enjoying a friendly walk. I also congratulate Mrs Pattingale on her fabulous organisation.
Continuing the sporting theme, it is great to see the excitement in the students regarding the upcoming Camden exchange. This year is looking like another great event with lots of school spirit and good-hearted sportsmanship. I’m looking forward to seeing our students next week giving their all on the field and walking away with smiles regardless of the outcome.
Looking a few weeks down the track, I can see many things still to come. Two that stand out are the Year 12 Trial Exams and the Year 11 Cross Roads camp. Both start on Monday 25 June and both require preparation. It goes without saying that Year 12 should now be using every possible opportunity to prepare for these exams and should take every opportunity offered to improve their performance. I also encourage Year 11 to get involved in the camp. Apart from meeting our mandatory hours for the Cross Roads development program, the experiences you will have with your peers will stay with you all your lives and add greatly to the enjoyment of Senior life.
Have a great fortnight.

Beanies 4 Brain Cancer/Shave 4 a Cure
On Friday 18 May the Student Representative Council and Prefects joined forces to host a "Beanies 4 Brain Cancer" and "Shave 4 a Cure" day to help raise money for cancer research and those affected by cancer.
Students and staff participated by wearing their warmest and weirdest beanies, while another, namely Brandon Holland, braved the shave! Hats off to Holland for his hairy sacrifice and to Reece from our local barber, Angelo's, for helping out.
Together, Cowra High School raised over $680 which was donated to both worthwhile charities.
CHIPS
CHIPS (Cowra High Improvement Program for Students) has a few places available for students in Years 7 to 9. The tutors in the CHIPS room are able to help to improve outcomes for students of all abilities. Tutoring is available in numeracy or literacy depending on individual student’s needs. Please contact Ms Swan, the CHIPS coordinator, at the school if you wish your child to be part of this program.
Support News
In the Support Unit, we have skilful and talented students like Sharlee Williams.
Sharlee, a Year 11 Hospitality Student and future Master Chef, is pictured here justifiably proud of the delicious Spicy Chicken and Salad she created.
