Artists in Action

Year 7 - Visual Arts

An impressive selection

Art, it’s the one place you want to go to after a long lesson. It’s where you settle down to calm your senses as well as get taught by skilful teachers and their inspiring knowledge of the arts. Our class is full of creative minds who are developing the skill to portray their inventive ideas, whether on a painting, sculpture or even a sketch. Whenever I enter art class, I am surrounded by these cheerful, loud and impressive selection of minds, that have their own highs and lows. In class now, we are coming to the end of ceramic work, whilst replicating the fauna and flora of a totem pole. I myself, am intrigued by the diverse and unique range of appealing totems, and the craftsmanship inducted. Our final totem or totems are now being dried, before being bisque fired in the kiln. I’m sure the whole class was disappointed as to not be working with clay anymore, as we all enjoyed it immensely. The final stage is adding texture and applying glazes to the totems, which will give our ceramic sculptures an extra appeal. Overall, art class is definitely, one of my favourite subjects. Its where we express, produce and incorporate ideas through different resources as well as being offered a tranquil learning environment.

In Visual Arts this term, we have been studying the properties of clay and have even created our own totem pole. From what I have discovered, a totem pole is a monumental carving, a type of Northwest Coast art, consisting of poles, posts or pillars, carved with symbols or figures. All of this information has been a lot of help with my future assessments. In my opinion, I really enjoy art because it allows me to express my feelings and emotions all over the page. I look forward studying art again next year, it has been an amazing time!
