FOCUS

within our Support Unit

Mrs Spencer has been working with Mrs Lukose, Mrs Sharma,  and all the Support Unit staff, to develop a Positive Behaviour for Learning Matrix for our students with disabilities. Each behavioural expectation has been taken and modified from the wider-school FOCUS Matrix, which focuses on being RESPONSIBLE, RESPECTFUL and SUCCESSFUL. The 3-tiered approach to behaviour was launched during Term 4 2017 and successfully continues within the school.

The Support Unit Matrix explicitly states behaviour expectations by using simplified language and short statements. Included in each setting are Boardmaker Picture Communication Symbols, which add to the students understanding of these expectations. Each FOCUS lesson is presented daily for one week during CONNECT lessons and are further reinforced on a Friday afternoon during the weekly assembly. Our students are responding positively to the new expectations while learning important life skills in the process.
