A NEST full of chocolate
The Nossal Environmental Sustainability Team (NEST) has been running for many years now and traditionally the team raise funds for charity during the year. This year we chose WWF as our organisation to fundraise for.
However, this year we were also given the opportunity by AlterEco Chocolates to fundraise directly for NEST activities. AlterEco chocolates are fairtrade and organic, some flavours are vegan, and their external wrappers are even biodegradable. Not to mention, the chocolate is delicious!
The students of NEST sold a variety of flavours including Brown Butter, Dark Salted Burnt Caramel, Mint and Quinoa within the school and local community. Thanks to their efforts they raised almost $500 to go towards environmental and sustainability activities in our school. We are looking forward to using these funds towards celebrating events such as World Environment Day and School Tree Day in 2017!
Recycling the ‘Non-recyclable’
This year NEST became involved in two recycling programs run by Terracycle. Terracycle recycle items that are traditionally not able to be recycled. We participated in the Beauty Products Recycling Program and the Oral Care Recycling Program which required us to collect old makeup, shampoo and conditioner bottles, toothbrushes, toothpaste etc over the course of the year. We have just sent off this year’s collection and were pleased to be able to send back 500 items that traditionally could not have been recycled.
Terracycle will now use their innovative recycling machinery to make these products into new sustainable products such as park benches and garden beds. We hope to continue to build on this successful campaign again next year.
