Principal's Report

Melton Secondary College students are taking on the Reading Challenge!

Reading with understanding is the most important skill for young people to develop at school. There are mountains of evidence from research that shows that the more reading children and teenagers do, the more confident they are at speaking and writing and the more opportunities and success they will experience in life. All students can increase their reading ability. For this reason the College has been implementing a new reading program across all year levels. Modeled on the primary school literacy approach, our Independent Reading Program at years 7 and 8 involves two teachers, the English teacher as well as a Reading Specialist, working with students in small groups and one-to-one on reading comprehension. Students choose a 'just right' book for their reading level from our newly renovated Library and read for a minimum of 20 minutes every day. All students are encouraged to increase their reading this year by joining the Premiers' Reading Challenge. Students can join by registering via this link. There is a competition for secondary school students with great prizes and it even has its own Facebook page  (follow the links).

NAPLAN tests

This year's NAPLAN tests will be conducted each morning on Tuesday 14th, Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th May. The tests assess literacy and numeracy levels for students in year 7 and 9. The information is extremely helpful for the College and helps us to support your child's learning. All students are expected to arrive on time each morning so that they can take part in the tests. Exemptions are only provided within ACARA guidelines and must be approved by the College.

MSC Students Flourishing in the Community

The college vision is for MSC to be A flourishing learning community achieving high rates of academic learning and bright futures for every student.

Students will flourish when they advance their learning in all areas of the curriculum. The learning students do in the local community can be as valuable as the learning they do at school, especially when it provides an opportunity for them to demonstrate our STARR Values. Below are some examples of this.

At the recent ANZAC Day dawn service I was honored to join our School Captains, Ms Sobey and Ms Nicholas to lay wreathes and show our respect for servicemen and women.

Last week MSC students attending an afternoon tea run by the Zonta Club of Melton to raise money and awareness for Ovarian Cancer. The girls, all from Ms Cook's year 9 International Foods class served tea and food for everyone in attendance. They were complimented for their polite and courteous behaviour. Well done to Zaina Bilemo, Abeny Aluong, Elishma Leong and Amer Cleongou for demonstrating our values and contributing to such a valuable cause in the Melton community.

MSC students continue to demonstrate our values on the sporting field and last week our lawn bowls team brought back the Senior Lawn Bowls state title. the young team of Alisha George, Emilee Davies and David George did brilliantly to defeat older and more experienced teams from across the state and secure the title. Fantastic effort team and a great display of Team Work, Ambition and Success.
