Update from the Year 5/6 Community
This week in the Year 5/6 Community we have started our unit on exploring gender norms in society. We started by looking at the first question you ask when someone has a baby. The common answer was "Is it a boy or a girl?" From there we had a great discussion about gender and the positive and negative influence that gender stereotypes can have on young people, particularly around the time of adolescence.
The students identified a range of gender expectations that are placed on them around this age and how this may influence the way young people think about themselves and the choices they have in life.
After a great discussion we recognised as a community that gender is just one aspect of who we are. The things we do, the things we say, the people we love, the places we go, our dreams and our aspirations are what make us the people we are.
Respectful Relationships Student Forum
On Friday of last week, Reuben, Lola, Kevin and Sophie from Year 5 attended a Student Forum for Respectful Relationships. The event was hosted by our Lead School, Caroline Chisholm Catholic College. Our students participated in a range of activities to reinforce the importance of building positive relationships built on respect. The students worked through scenarios, identified the most important qualities for a leader, and explored the notion of control in relationships.
Our Year 5 students put in such a great effort all day, sharing their ideas with the other schools, interacting with other students and participating in great discussion. I was very proud!
