The Art of Cultural Exchange
Over the past few weeks, Exchange Students from Japan and New Caledonia were invited to take part in Cultural exchange activities with students from Year 11 Art, Year 8 Art and Year 9 Art.
St. Peter’s College art students were asked to host our visitors and work in small groups where they could swap and exchange Cultural similarities and differences.
Each group was asked to communicate their collaboration through art and design using art materials such as fineliners, colour pencils, and Posca Markers. As the groups worked together, individuals created small artworks which then produced one or more Badge for each participant.
Students were than able to exchange badges with each as a memento of their shared experience.

St Vinnie's Winter Appeal
Having a warm, comfortable bed to lie on at night is something most people take for granted but for many experiencing homelessness it is a luxury they cannot afford. That is why Students and Staff at St. Peter’s College in Cranbourne are asking for your help by way of donations of new (or good quality clean) sleeping bags, quilts and blankets.
“We know that at this time of year Vinnies run dangerously low on warm sleeping materials and are calling on our community to help to donate new, adult sized, good quality sleeping bags. They would also love brand new quilts and blankets to distribute”.
“While a sleeping bag is a long way from a comfortable bed in a warm, safe room, it can still make a difference for people who are sleeping rough during these cold winter days and nights.
“Year on year we have seen an increase in the number of people who are homeless, yes in our local area, and with the nights getting colder, demand for blankets and sleeping bags is very high. A good sleeping bag, warm quilt or thick blanket is vitally important for people who are sleeping rough to protect them from the elements at night and help prevent a decline in health.”
Donations can be dropped at either Campus Reception or money can be donated and staff will negotiate a bulk purchase. Pricing for the blankets is as follows:
Baby Blanket $5
Adult Blanket $ 10
Please help us achieve our aim

Science Week West Campus
Last week we celebrated National Science Week with the theme of “Game Changers & Change Makers”. We started the week with a QR Code “Great Race” at lunchtime. Students used QR code readers on their mobile phones to decode and then answer Science questions hidden around the school. Latesha Franks in Year 7 answered all questions correctly, taking out the first prize of a $20 gift voucher. The team of Cliona Barrientos, Emily Bennett and Naya Lay came in second.
On Tuesday lunchtime a group of about twenty students built mousetraps cars, which they then raced in the Donnelly Foyer at lunchtime on Thursday. The car which travelled the longest distance (9.3m) was designed and raced by Arshdeep Singh. The fastest car over two metres (4.28 sec) was designed and raced by Tanaka Murungweni. Both students are in Year 7 and both won $20 gift vouchers. Finally, all cars raced off in the Science Week Grand Prix. Jade Gomes and Aaliyah Sykes took out the prize money in this race with their “Red Rocket”.
The Science Spectacular was held at lunchtime on Wednesday, with Science teachers showing their best demonstrations and students trying out different practical activities. The Van der Graaff machine produced some hair-raising moments, teabag rockets were launched, chromatography was used to make some colourful flowers and sodium reacted explosively with water. Elephant’s toothpaste spurted out over the courtyard and sugar was turned into carbon.
Finally, on Friday, many of our Year 8 students held a Science Fair in the labs, showcasing the scientific investigations they had worked on in class over the past three weeks. I would like to thank the Science teachers and laboratory support staff for their time and enthusiasm in putting together all of these activities. Most of all I would like to thank the students who participated in the activities each day. Scientist of the Week Award goes to Latesha Franks for being actively involved in all the Science Week events.

This means that the College has now qualified 10 players for the upcoming State Championships to be held at Maribynong College in September. Tim Broome, who runs Chess Kids, specifically noted during the medal presentations that we have two of the finest players in the state currently in Darcy Paulka and Anthony Ouch. This is an accolade to be proud of. Well done boys!
The next challenge for the mighty Knights of St. Peter's College will be the upcoming SIS Chess Tournament in September, prior to the State Championships. We wish them well.
