Buddies
With help from their Grade 5 and 6 buddies, the Prep children enjoyed learning
how to make and decorate clay pots. The older children became the teachers, allowing Prep students to learn about the pinch pot method and joining techniques. They used coloured ‘slip’ to add decorative details before the beautiful pots were fired in the school's kiln. Well done to the Preps and their teachers!
Bunjil the Eagle
Grade 1 children listened to the Aboriginal Dreamtime Story about Bunjil the Eagle, who was believed by the Wurundjeri people to be the creator of the land, the waterways and the people. Students looked at various Aboriginal artworks from different parts of Australia, including dot paintings and carvings. Students applied the features of local Victorian Aboriginal artwork, such as parallel lines and repetitive patterns, to design detailed patterned feathers to contribute towards a wonderful collaborative version of Bunjil’s wings. The large wings are located on the wall outside 1CT’s classroom in the main building.
Tim Burton
Students in Grade 6 have been studying the work of Tim Burton. Using a range of materials such as Magiclay, wire, fabric and armatures they made sculptures inspired by his drawings and film characters. They employed the ‘dry point’ printing technique to produce prints based on Burton’s work.
Artworks by Maddie (6GB), John (6RW), Freya (6ES) and Mitch (6RW).
Art in the community
You may have seen the mural that has appeared on the side of the Collingwood public housing building. The 20-storey mural is the tallest ever painted on a building in the Southern Hemisphere, and once completed, will feature the faces of four residents who hail from three continents. Instilling pride and reminding the wider community that real people live in the often maligned buildings is key to the project's success, which has been created by local artist Matt Adnate. He was commissioned by street art collective Juddy Roller to paint the imposing work, which dominates the skyline as people head north from the city along Wellington Street.
