Principal's Report

Cyber Safety Parent Information Evening

On Tuesday May 21 cyber safety expert Trent Ray from the Cyber Safety Project will be presenting to parents regarding the online habits of our students at Brentwood Secondary College.  He will explore what our students are doing, provide parents with an understanding of some of the apps and online environments our students are engaging with, whilst explaining the risks and benefits of each.  He will also share strategies for parents on how to support their children in being safe online.

Trent will be using data from our own students regarding their habits online to shape the presentation and share this information with parents. I strongly encourage parents to attend the evening because online safety is one of the main concerns we hear from parents.  The information presented on the night will help you keep your children safe online.  This is an opportunity that should not be missed!

NAPLAN

This week our Year 7 and 9 students undertook NAPLAN. NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life; such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy.  They are one aspect of the school’s assessment and reporting process and do not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student’s performance. I would like to congratulate all of our students in the positive manner in which they approached the NAPLAN tests this year. A NAPLAN report will be issued to parents later in the year.  As a school, we will use the NAPLAN results to examine individual learning progress from Year 7 to Year 9.  We will also use the results to identify strengths and weaknesses in our teaching programs and to set goals in literacy and numeracy.

Landscaping Work

This week also saw the start of some landscaping work near the tennis courts and the TLC building. Our old pathway into the school from the bus stop has been removed and a new pathway into the school for our students is being laid next Tuesday. New walls will be built at the bus stop entry with Brentwood signage. New trees and shrubs are also being planted to improve the look of the front of the school from Watsons Road. These works are a part of our strategy to improve school pride and the positive climate of the school. We will keep you updated as the works continue.
