Well done, Brittany.
Remembrance Day Ceremony 2018
On the 12th of November 2018, Lake Illawarra High School commemorated the 100th year anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended the First World War. Sixty-two thousand Australian soldiers died in the Great War and to commemorate this significant event in Australia’s history, our staff and students combined to create a memorial of 6200 small crosses each representing ten Australian soldiers that lost their lives in the conflict. The crosses were carefully placed at the front of the school and acted as the centrepiece for our Armistice Day memorial service. Thank you to all our distinguished guests, staff and students for making the service such a memorable one.

History and Geography visit Lake Illawarra South Primary School
During Week 4, Lake Illawarra High School Geography and History teachers visited Lake Illawarra South Primary School to run lessons for the Years 3 & 4 students. Using the giant world globe, the students learnt about the continents, oceans and latitude and longitude. Students participated in Geography learning activities where they made their own globes using balloons and History activities which included making a Medusa headband. Both the teachers and students enjoyed themselves with many of the primary school students already excited for high school!

Year 9 Camp at Wombaroo
Year 9 had a fabulous time at Camp Wombaroo, in the Southern Highlands, last week. The students challenged their fears and pushed themselves out of their comfort zones by taking on some exhilarating activities at great heights. We had some extreme weather, but the students soldiered on, making the most of the experience. I was so proud of all the students who attended, and it gave me an opportunity to catch up with them and spend some down time away from school. The staff at Wombaroo were exceptional and very complimentary saying how impressed they were with the lovely manners and conduct of our students, and commented on their camaraderie. It was a pleasure for Myself, Mr Gigliotti and Mr Shannon to take Year 9 on camp.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
Promoting Positive Behaviour for Learning.
As a PBL school LIHS rewards students who are respectful, responsible and safe in every setting.
Our school values:
RESPECT ⎜RESPONSIBILITY ⎜SAFETY
All classes have recently completed a ‘Right Place, Right Time’ and ‘Manners’ lessons. These presentations generated great discussion and problem-solving ideas.
Future specific PBL lessons will continue to occur so as to further create safe, effective teaching and learning environments.
We show RESPECT by being tolerant and accepting everyone, being polite and considerate of others. Using appropriate language and wearing school uniform.
We show RESPONSIBILITY by being at the right place, right time. Staying on task in class and being prepared. Following procedures and instructions including putting rubbish in the bin and caring for our surroundings.
We show SAFETY by following instructions. Following a 'hands off' policy and having a smoke free zone.
Weekly PBL Focus Values throughout Term 3 will continue to remain a high priority in all settings. Specific PBL lessons will also continue to occur so as to encourage active learning in classrooms around the school.
Focus of the Fortnight is: RESPONSIBILITY
We show responsibility when we follow teacher instructions promptly.
Students will be on time for school and their next class.
VIVOs will be rewarded to all students who are prompt to school/class and exhibit appropriate behaviour both in the classroom and the playground.
We show responsibility when we take every opportunity to succeed.
Boats Away!
Students from the Year 9 Marine and Aquaculture Technology class, have tested their hand constructed boats in Lake Illawarra last week. This activity forms a valuable component of the students Boat Construction Portfolio assessment task, that has been ongoing from the start of the term. Students were tasked with creating a recreational boat from recyclable materials readily available at the Lake Illawarra High School, chiefly cardboard and paper. Outcomes were mixed, however, students will now evaluate their chosen designs and create a portfolio of their project as the final assessment task for the course.
Well done to all students involved!
