SRC Youth Summit Shellharbour

On Friday the 6th of September 5 our SRC Students Lilli Anger, Alyssa Bazzano, Lachlan Moosmann, Logan O’sullivan and Kasey Yates had the opportunity to speak before members of Shellharbour City Council and Community Leaders at the inaugural Shellharbour City Youth Summit.

Our school got invited to the event, and had to complete a video presentation, poster, and oral presentation on what are Top 5 issues effecting young people at Lake Illawarra High School.  We obtained our results by conducting a survey over 2 days at school on what was important to the students at Lake Illawarra High School. Our representatives discussed how the following issues are important and what we can do to address them in the community:

  • Access to Sporting Facilities
  • Fun activities to do with Friends
  • Work and Money
  • Transport
  • Social Media and Internet Access

It would have been a daunting experience particularly for our Year 7 students speaking in front of a large and formal audience. But our students conducted themselves in a mature and professional manner representing the school with distinction. Students had a great day conversing with other SRC students from the local area, and community leaders on key issues for young people. Mental Health was a theme that kept occurring throughout the conversations, and what steps need to be in place to address this issue. To top the day off our video presentation got voted the best out of all the attending schools. A great local iniative  which our school hopes to participate in next year.

Youth Roundtable Excursion

On Monday the 2/9/19, five SRC students Lilli Anger, Alyssa Bazzano, Jacinta Bazzano, Lachlan Moosmann and  Logan O’sullivan represented our school at the annual Youth Round Table initiative, at Dapto Ribbonwood Centre. Every Year our local member of parliament Stephen Jones, meets with young students from the region, to discuss issues affecting young people.

Our students represented the school with great pride, and actively contributed to discussion on mental health, housing affordability, education resources and conservation of the environment. Stephen Jones takes the issues put forward by young people to the national parliament in Canberra.

Our students gained a lot from the experience, and are gaining valuable skills that will assist them as future leaders.
