Eligibility and Nominations for Primary School
Captains/Vice Captains.
Students in Year 5 will receive a copy of the ‘Boorowa Central School conditions of Eligibility for School Captain/Vice Captains’ this term. Students who are planning to nominate for school captain/vice-captain roles need to read this carefully with their parents and consider the conditions for taking on these important leadership roles within our school. Leadership is a key component of all aspects of school life here at Boorowa Central and we rely on students with leadership ability and positive attitudes to help and assist our younger students.
If you have enquiries please do not hesitate to contact Mr Stuart.
Primary Learning
Year 5/6 Class
Well, it never seems to slow down in the 5/6 class. The last few weeks we have been as busy as always, with plenty of extra-curricular activities happening as well as our regular class lessons.
English
We have completed our unit of work on Wonder by R. J. Palacio and have watched the film starring Owen Wilson and Julia Roberts that was released in 2017. We have done some comparative writing about the differences between the book and film, completed writing a film review, explored the choices made by the author and director in regards to story and dare I say it...there may have been a tear or two shed over the last couple of weeks. We recommend everyone watch the film, but have tissues ready!
NAIDOC Week Preparation
We have created some 'erasure poetry' based on:
Uluru Statement from the Heart
Speaking and Listening from Heart by Blaze Kwaymullina
“Treaty” Song Lyrics by Yothu Yindi
Erasure poetry is based on 'erasing' words from a full text and using the left over words to create a meaningful piece of writing. The students found this a great exercise, as they didn't actually have to write anything! They then created some Aboriginal artwork around the sides and presented them together. We will be submitting these in a competition for NAIDOC and Reconciliation week. Watch this space!
Science
We had an absolute 'blast' during science week, conducting experiments on flight, damage control, space and rockets. The whole of week 4 was based around science and we thank Miss Moorby for organising so many great activities throughout the week. We will do another in-depth science week before the end of the year.
Maths
We have finished a long unit of work on the four operations and have now progressed onto reading, interpreting and creating graphs and charts. This is essential for us to learn because lots of real life maths is found through graphs and charts especially when we get older and start working at a job.
Creative Arts
We have created some outer space artworks using photographs, crayon, paints and pencils. We continue to practice our song for SMArt and drama night and will begin our drama act when we get closer to it (it's pretty exciting).
Some achievements over the past few weeks:
-Tamsyn collecting over 2000 plastic bottle lids to be recycled into prosthetics for people in need; what a fantastic thing you're doing Tamsyn. Keep donating please!
-Great effort and results at District Athletics
-Incredible dress-ups for Book Week
-Binit Binit dancers performing at Yass
A few reminders:
-Sydney Thunder Cricket Clinic Wednesday 4th September

Infants Learning
Year 2/3 have been using their teddy bears in Maths to collect data and present their findings in graphs. We also collected data on the various colours of gummy bears and found that red was a very popular colour.
We all enjoyed participating in Science Week activities and we made our own paper planes, decorated them and tested how far they could fly. Our flight paths ranged from 2 to 10 metres.
During Book Week we shared our favourite books, wrote about some of our favourite book characters and we had fun dressing up as well. During cooking we made tuna sushi rolls and fairy bread, which were both delicious.
In Geography we have been talking about places that are special to us and why. We have also been listening to some Aboriginal stories of how their land is important to them and why.
We are enjoying using various mediums in Art to create some beautiful art works, we investigated some threatened species in the Boorowa area (the Tarengo Leek Orchid and the Black Chinned Honeyeater) and we drew them to raise awareness of these animals and plants.
Year 2/3 have been working on relaxation and calming down techniques in PDH. Last week we blew all of our worries and anger into a cup of water through a straw. We are also able to use deep breathing and counting backwards to bring ourselves back to a calm state.
