Yr 11 Construction - Work Placement
Work Placement with CrossBuild by Byron Campbell
I was going into my work placement excited and eager to learn about the building industries. I had an early rise that first morning as I had to be ready to be picked up by 7.00am. My first day included screwing off a deck which I had never done before and was interested in learning about. My week included many different activities and it was a very good week. I would like to thank Shane for having me. I learnt a lot.
Yr 10 Work Experience
Recently Year 10 students were offered the opportunity to participate in work experience. Some of the benefits of this program are
- Bringing the working world to life.
- Relating your studies to the world of work.
- Learning new skills.
- Improving your employability.
In order to participate in this experience students had to select a workplace they wished to go to, write a letter to the employer requesting they be allowed to work there, have the employer and parents complete necessary paperwork and for some students they had to organise accommodation and transport.
Students that completed all these tasks attended work experience across the local region from Queanbeyan to Young and many places in between. All employers were contacted during the week and had nothing but praise for the students and their efforts. Speaking with students upon their return they all stated that it was a valuable experience. Students will now follow up with a letter of thanks to the employers, review the skills they used or need and begin to consider where they might like to go for their next work experience.
The school congratulates the students on their fine performance and thank the employers who accepted them into their workplaces. Thanks also to the parents who supported their students through the process and in some cases spent many hours transporting them to and from the workplace.

Food Technology
David boiling eggs and slicing shallots to make curried egg sandwiches. Felix about to eat his poached eggs and Malcolm making French Toast
Stage 5 have been creating a dish where Egg was the 'hero'.
This term they are studying 'Food in Australia', where they investigate the history of Australian cuisine and the influences other cultures have had on what we eat today.
Year 7/8 Technology 'Green' have been working on a unit called 'Grow your food, fill your belly', where we have prepared, planted and nurtured a garden containing a variety of seeds.
As part of this unit we have discussed the concept of 'paddock to plate', using what we grow to make beautiful dishes in the kitchen.
Students chose breakfast with a focus on eggs (from our chooks at school), and added items that we grew in our garden - Shallots, tomatoes and parsley for garnish.
Here are some pics of our growing garden and our students enjoying their breakfast.

Biology Excursion
Our Year 11 Biology students visited Mt Annan Botanic Gardens this week to immerse themselves in the Biological Diversity Study Day. Students were able to consolidate what we have been learning at school with some hands-on activities. We were treated to touching some amazing Australian animals from Taronga Zoo while discussing the adaptations that aid their survival and the evolution that has occurred. Next we toured the plant nursery and learned about how the Wollemi Pine (which was thought to be extinct) has been cultivated using genetic technology. We also examined the survival characteristics of other native plants with a walk around the gardens. In our final session, conducted by the Australian Museum, we examined real fossils to build a picture of how Australian animals have evolved over time. It was great to have Crookwell High School join us as part of the Rural Science Network.
