The advantage of a boarding education lies in the sense of belonging to a community and the attachment one feels to something bigger

At Kinross Wolaroi, if you ask any of the boarders whose House is best they will always respond, ‘mine’. Whether you have only just arrived in Year 7 or have come to boarding later, you should feel at home in your House. It should be a place you look forward to walking through the door, where you feel happy and free to be yourself, a place where you can escape the pressures of the classroom and other aspects of School life, a place where you can relax with friends but also a place where you can get your head down and work when you need to. Most of all, it should be home.

In boarding, we are at our strongest when we look out for each other and often, all it takes is a friendly smile, a tap on the shoulder, a look as you pass in the hallway. At Kinross-Wolaroi, we should feel comfortable celebrating our differences, comfortable in the knowledge that our diversity is what brings us together; better together and stronger as one.

As I wandered around some of the boarding houses on Monday evening, I witnessed firsthand the sense of belonging and the diversity. I was reminded of the sense of excitement and energy that accompanies the mad rush at the start of term; conversations in the corridors, close friends reconnecting after a lifetime (3 weeks!) apart, holiday tales of adventures abroad and those closer to home like a week on the coast or in QLD. Swapping stories about ski trip injuries and the near misses on the slopes, weeks spent working hard on the farm in such trying times. On my walk through I met with a few of our new students who were being looked after by their ‘buddies’; so pleasing to see. These ‘newbies’ are all ready to start their own journey, build new friendships and create shared experiences that they will look back on fondly in years to come.

This term will be another busy one! Looking at the upcoming calendar there is much going on and hard to keep abreast of it all.

The major house events this term will be the House Dinners which Heads of House are busy organising. Dates were advertised well in advance but here they are below for your confirmation. Please RSVP as soon as possible to assist catering.

Loader House – Saturday 4th August

New House – Saturday 11th August

Weymouth House/Wolaroi House – Saturday 25th August

Trathen House – Saturday 25th August

Miller House – Saturday 1st September

Other highlights for this term also include joint social events between Stuart-Douglas and Trathen Houses starting with ten pin bowling this Sunday. The Weymouth and Wolaroi boys will be gearing up for their annual rugby grudge match which takes place before their respective dinners on the 25th August. A new addition to the weekend program this term will be yoga sessions on a Sunday which take place on the PLC campus and two new fire pits for both boys and girls have been purchased so I envisage plenty of cool Saturday nights by the fire for all our boarders. The TREE program has scheduled two major cooking events this term with Cooking 101 and the Gourmet Burger competition taking place at various times. All in all, it promises to be another full and exciting term for our boarders with plenty of time for study built into the program too! The weekend activities schedule will be published shortly as details are finalised and sent out to you to help in your planning for the term ahead.

I wish all boarders and boarding families the best for the term ahead.
