Rugby News

While many of us were resting up over the holidays, a few KWS boys and staff in opens and U16s have been involved in representative rugby first for ISA, then for NSW and the amazing news this week that two KWS boys have been selected in the 42-man Australian Schoolboys squad to play Tonga and NZ in October. From there a squad of 27 will be selected to tour the UK in November.

The representative season started with selections for the ISA teams with 10 Opens and 5 U16’s being given the call up to represent the association in the NSW championships in Sydney. The boys played really well with ISA 1st grade putting in two very competitive performances against Combined High Schools (CHS) and Combined Associated Schools (CAS). KWS boys shone in poor conditions.

From the NSW Championships 3 Kinross boys, Donny Freeman, Aiden Kelso and Will Smith were selected to represent NSW at the national championships in Sydney during the holidays. NSW dominated proceedings with both NSW teams playing each other in the final. Unfortunately Donny suffered a broken collar bone in game 2 but by this point he and Aiden had done enough to satisfy the Australian selectors, with both being named in the 42-man Australian Schoolboys squad.

A list of our recent representatives is below. I’m sure you will all join me in congratulating them all on their fantastic efforts in representing KWS at a state and National level. We are all incredibly proud of them all and wish them the best of luck in the remainder of their season and careers.

NSW Swimming Country Short Course Championships

The NSW swimming country short course championship were held over the weekend of the 7th & 8th of July. KWS had a team of 20 contesting the championships. As always Country is an incredibly competitive weekend with 81 clubs competing from all over NSW and Canberra. The goal was to make the top 10, sometimes a difficult feat with dual age groups and small teams. The team performed strongly to claim 5 gold, 6 silver, 7 bronze and finish in the top 10 in an additional 27 events. All eight relay teams finished in the top 10 with the women’s 15/over teams claiming two silver medals. Every member of the team contributed to the points tally by scoring points in an individual event or as a part of a relay team. At the end of the meet KWS finished 10th in the point score and 9th in the medal tally. Collette Lyons is to be congratulated on breaking the record for the 13yrs 100 breaststroke with an almost unbelievable swim of 1:12.80, a time that would have seen her medal in the 16yrs age group. Collette also broke the record for the 13yrs 400 IM. The coaching staff were pleased with the team performance; there was a lot of team spirit and support in the group. As always thanks to the parents for their continued support of the team.
