Principal's Report

Les Misérables
Les Misérables will premier next week and the show promises to be one not to be missed. Students and staff have been working tirelessly to ensure this, our first musical, will be one to remember. I have heard some of the performances and I can attest that the singing was breathtaking. The show will be held in the newly opened Catholic Regional College Caroline Springs theatre, a beautiful facility with stunning acoustics. A full orchestra and an exceptionally talented cast under the direction of very skilled and talented staff will result in a most memorable experience. I urge families to consider getting along to one of the four performances as there are still tickets available for each show. This will truly be a production that will be talked about for years to come and one that should not be missed.
Parent – Student – Teacher Interviews
The recent interview sessions were well attended by families providing staff with the chance to meet with parents and discuss the progress of students in Year 11 and 12 classes. Staff welcome this opportunity to meet with and provide feedback on student achievement so that families understand how their son or daughter may or may not be progressing with their studies across a range of subject areas. The basis for the interviews were the interim reports which were released to families prior to the interviews. Families who have not yet gone through the interim report with their son or daughter or families who have done this and would like to ask questions may still contact their child’s teacher in any of the various subjects. Parents may also arrange a meeting with staff if they were unable to secure an appointment on the evening. Staff are always willing to work with families to see students achieve their best and welcome the chance to provide further feedback or to clarify any details of the report that may be required.
Winter Uniform
The weather has changed and we are experiencing some colder mornings and days now. The Federation of CRC has included a new item of uniform in the range which may be worn by all 7-12 students. The outerwear jacket which comprises a windbreaker and a zip out fleece vest (2 jackets in one) can now be purchased through the Academy Uniform Shops. The outer jacket may be worn in the following ways:
- As an outer garment over the Rugby Top for the PE Uniform
- As an outer garment for VET students when they are in a VET Uniform
- On extremely cold days over the top of the blazer (the jumper and blazer should be worn).
The item does not and is not approved as a replacement or alternative to the College blazer.
VCAL and the TTC – State Award
The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Achievement Awards were presented at Federation Square on the morning of 29 April.
The VCAL is a hands-on senior secondary certificate of education that provides students with work-related experience, and develops literacy, numeracy and personal skills. The certificate is a pathway to many careers and educational opportunities with the senior certificate being recognised by many Universities for entry to their degree courses.
The VCAL Achievement Awards celebrate the outstanding achievements of students who have participated in and completed a VCAL qualification. The awards recognise the exceptional efforts of the teachers and community partners who have played significant roles in the development and delivery of VCAL programs.
Catholic Regional College Sydenham was thrilled to be a recipient of one of these awards with recognition given to our Federation CRC Trades Training Centre.
Congratulations to the following 2018 VCAL Achievement Award winners from Melbourne’s Catholic schools:
- VCAL Student Achievement Award – Senior Outstanding Achievement: Dana Yap from John Paul College, Frankston
