Year 6 News

Last week on Tuesday 14 March, the sustainability team enjoyed a day out in Sorrento. It was an early start to try to get to Sorrento pier at 8:50am which was an 1hour drive to the pier.

There were four other schools with us and before we got on the boat we had to get fitted with flippers and wet suits. It took a while for everyone to get kitted out, but after the safety briefing, we were able to get on the boat.

Once we were on the boat, we found a spot on the lower deck and we received our snorkel and the news about receiving free hot chocolates got everyone excited. On the way we were allowed to go to the front of the boat and we arrived at our first location.

Our first location was Chinamans hat. At Chinamans Hat, we saw lots of seals either sleeping or swimming in the water around us. The smell of the seals was overpowering, and the water was ice-cold. The current was strong and our stop here was short. A highlight was the giant sting ray who was skimming the sand for prey.

Our second stop was Popes Eye Marine Park, this is a man-made marine sanctuary. We had a snorkel here where we encountered lots of seaweed, fish and a couple of seals sleeping on the rocks.

For the final stop we travelled back to shore to hunt for some weedy sea dragons. Although the water was freezing, we all got into have a look. They were hard to spot because they were camouflaged amongst the seaweed. Our instructor pointed one out for us all to see.

When we got back to the dock, we had a final group photo before leaving. All in all, we had a great time and can’t wait for our next excursion.
