Your Parent Candidates 2023

Eric Lin

My name is Eric Lin, I work as a Principal Cloud Engineer for one of the Big Data companies from the US called Snowflake. Our family has 3 kids, and Trevor (year 10)  has 2 little sisters who are studying at Glendal Primary School in Glen Waverley. Personally I like fitness, so I run and go to the gym regularly.

I have not been involved with the school council before due to family commitment with 3 kids at home, though I have been keen to join the school council. I did perform the Enrolment Officer duty for my little girls' kindergarten at Appletree Hill Preschool for 2 years before.

Now all 3 kids have grown up and I can now have more free time myself, so I think I can start participating in the school activities and learn a bit more about how school runs and understand more about the school that my kids go to.

Alan Dormer

I am the Managing Director of Opturion, a company that provides intelligent decision support. We work closely with Monash University and Data61 (CSIRO), both shareholders of Opturion.

I have been on the School Council as Treasurer for the last two years. I was previously on the advisory board for St Mary’s Primary School and on the board of Infoxchange, a not-for-profit promoting technology for social justice.

I work in data science, optimisation and AI and have employed many STEM graduates over the last 30 years. Iunderstand their potential to solve problems, create wealth and make the world a better place.

My elder sons are at JMSS; Jack (year 12) and Sam (year 11). I have another son, Liam, in year 9, who has similar interests in science and mathematics.

I believe that I have made a positive contribution to the School Council and would welcome the opportunity to continue.

Thomai Fischbacher

By way of background, I have 3 children. As well as Alex (year 10 Doherty), I have a son - Herbie, currently in year 12, at Mazenod College, and a daughter - Victoria, currently in year 8, at Avila College.

I have a Bachelor of Laws(Hons)/Bachelor of Arts and have extensive experience sitting on educational and volunteer boards. I was on the Committee (mostly in the position of President) of Brentwood Pre-School for 5 years. I was on the Education Board of St Leonard’s Primary School (mostly in the position of Chairperson) for some 11 years. I am currently Vice President of the Glen Waverley Cricket Club but have been involved in the junior committee with that club for the past 5 years.

As parents, my husband, Herb, and I, like to take an active part in our children’s education and assist where we can. With my legal background I have a particular interest in policy development. I believe that my legal experience and practical experience would make me a good candidate for a position on the JMSS School Council.

Zubair Baig

I graduated with a PhD in Computer Science from Monash University in 2008. Currently, I am working as an Associate Professor in Cyber Security with Deakin University’s School of Information Technology. As part of my responsibilities, I direct the post graduate courses in cyber security and serve as the head of research translation. I am a passionate cyber security awareness campaigner, actively contributing via the media (e.g., data privacy piece for the Herald Sun), delivering demos and talks to high school students (e.g., Werribee High and MGS) and interviewing for television channels (ABC 24 and Channel Nine). Given my 15 years of academic and scientific research background, I believe that I can support the JMSS community through my ability to engage and contribute to science and technology extra-curricular content for high school students. I can also provide my inputs to foster stronger in-class technical experiences including the incorporation of active learning models in STEM courses. Additionally, I can bring along my cross cultural and cross institution experiences aligned with diversity in teaching and learning practices at the global scale as well as to help identify career pathways for Y10-12 students.
