At St Helena’s Catholic Primary School, our teachers use Talk for Writing as a resource to assist in the teaching of writing. Talk for Writing helps students to develop their writing skills by focusing on three key stages: imitation, innovation, and invention.

At the imitation stage, students are encouraged to learn a text by heart by hearing, speaking, and performing it. By doing this, they become familiar with the structure, language, and vocabulary of the text, which provides a solid foundation for their writing. At the innovation stage, students learn to adapt the text by making changes to the characters, setting, or plot. This helps them to develop their creativity and originality in writing.

Finally, at the invention stage, students are given the opportunity to create their text based on the skills they have learned. By using this approach, students learn to internalise the writing process and develop the confidence to write fluently and independently.
