Meet Our College Captains

2023

Marcelina Tombra, College Captain - Clyde North

What do you see as your role as a leader?

For me, being a leader is having the ability to inspire people and help individuals find their voice. I see my role as a leader to encourage students to be a source of change and stand up for what they believe in. The role is about being someone that's approachable and a person that students can feel comfortable speaking to about anything that bothers them when they don't feel comfortable enough to speak to a teacher. I think it’s really important that I lift students standard of themselves, their visions, goals and aspirations so they’re not limited

What is one of the positives about being a student at St. Peter's College?

A positive about being a student at St. Peter’s College is the diversity of the college. It gives me the opportunity to learn about different cultures and  traditions and for others to have the opportunity to understand me as much as I’d love to have the opportunity to understand them .

Who is the one person you admire most and why?

As cliche as it sounds, the people I admire most are my parents. They are the reason I choose to work hard everyday and dream big. Everyday I work to show them that risks they’ve taken and continue to take, for the benefit of my siblings and I are worth it. My parents are inspirational in my eyes and are a personal example of how good things dont come easy. To get what you want out of life it takes risk, determination, love and perserverance. My parents are the dream team. They’ve had each others backs for over 40 years and counting. They are very humble, selfless, kind and respectful people. I aspire to be like them.

What are your goals as Captain in 2023?

Restore the livelihood of the college we once had before Covid.

To increase engagement in the college community

Recognise and appreciate students for what makes them themselves.

Boost confidence in individuals

 2023 College Theme

“Let your Light Shine” - Matthew 5:16

This years college theme has to be my favourite so far and I feel that it aligns with the goals I have as college captain this year. To me this verse is about getting outside of our comfort zones and using our gifts in the best way we can. For example, If someone asks for help and its something you’re good at offer to use your gift and help them. Each of us have been blessed and made unique in the image and likeness of God. In a world where it’s so easy to get caught up trying to be like others and fitting into society’s standards, we can forget that its a good thing to be our own person. We can try our best to be like others but the reality is that person already exists and can’t be replicated so the only option is to be yourself. Letting your light shine is all about being not afraid of judgment and not allowing others to invalidate your gifts. Instead,  we should stand in courage and be content with what makes us different.

What do you see as your role as a leader?

As a leader, I only wish to serve the students of this College. It is my vision to embrace all voices of the students and use that support and encourage them. I wish for all students to feel respected and to feel important inside and outside of the College gates.

What is one of the positives about being a student at St. Peter's College?

St. Peter’s College brings about a great sense of modern community, with a wide variety of students with different background and stories. No single student will have a journey that is similar to another. The diversity the college displays is something I am proud of and am grateful to be apart of. Every story shared is met with support and interest, I believe it to be one of the greatest treasures of the college.

Who is the one person you admire most and why?

I admire my Mum and Dad, a lot. Both of them have worked so hard to provide a fortunate and healthy upbringing for me. My Mum sacrificed a lot for me, which I know most people may have not given up lightly. She has inspired me through her kindness and persistence.  My Dad has always worked hard and challenges himself constantly to better himself. He has inspired me to never give up, no matter how hard life kicks you in the guts. Both my parents have inspired me to go into this leadership position and I try to embrace their strongest qualities while I work on myself in this position.

What are your goals as Captain in 2023?

My goal as a Captain is to bridge the gap between all students in the College. Bringing together a tightly knit community is a legacy I would love to leave behind. I would love all students to enjoy every single day they come school, and look forward to every “tomorrow” that comes.

“Let your Light Shine” - Matthew 5:16

How will you live this statement through your leadership role?

To let your light shine is the way you embrace your own talents and display them to the world. Letting your light shine is not restricted to a role like Captaincy, it is showing how you believe you can be great.
