"From the College Archives"

This newsletter ‘From the Archives looks at events from ten and fifteen years ago.

St. Peter’s College has a long and proud tradition of producing outstanding pieces of Art: two dimensional, three dimensional, animated, visual, prose and poetry.

In 2013, this tradition led to the inclusion of student work in a publication called Shared Stories. This publication accepted written and visual submissions from students representing many different schools across Victoria, including St. Peter’s College. For the past ten years, students from both Cranbourne and Clyde North campuses have been invited by their Art and Language teachers to produce work that can be submitted to Shared Stories. Copies of past Shared Stories can be found in the respective campus libraries/learning spaces.

Fifteen years ago, a group of students and two teachers from St. Peter’s College were preparing to attend World Youth Day 08 that was held in Sydney. This was the second time that WYD had been held in the Southern hemisphere. The first WYD in the Southern Hemisphere was Buenos Aries in 1987.

World Youth Day (WYD) is an event for young people organized by the Catholic Church that was initiated by Pope John Paul II in 1985. For the first celebration of WYD in 1986, bishops were invited to schedule an annual youth event to be held every Palm Sunday in their dioceses. It is celebrated at the diocesan level annually—in most places on Palm Sunday from 1986 to 2020, and from 2021 on Christ the King Sunday—and at the international level every two to three years at different locations. This year WYD is to be held in Lisbon, Portugal. Seven young people from St. Agatha’s Parish, some are previous St. Peter’s College students, are busy preparing to attend in late July.

Hopefully, they will both enjoy and find personal development from the experience as the pilgrims of 2008 did.
